Millennials are more narcissistic
As the world today has changed to become more advanced. This provides a lot of
opportunities for millennials to expand technological savvy and promote themselves. On the one
hand, it is said that the millennials are more inflated views of themselves as rising of social
media use, selfies and the habit of constantly updating what they’re doing, thinking and feeling.
This seems that the technological and cultural change may rise in conceit and narcissism.
Moreover, millennials are known as the more narcissistic generation of our time because the
individualism has been increasing through the last few decades (Jarrett, 2017). For instance, with
parents, and society as a whole, they see young people’ individual achievement is more
impressive than their civic duty. There is my experience for the phenomenon is when I endorsed
the statement with my sister in the ‘90s. When she was nominated to become a leader of a group;
she said that she tended to claim “I am not sure if I would make a good leader”. This had a less
narcissistic meaning then than it does today “I see myself as a good leader.” That is why people
suppose that today’s millennials is more Generation Me.
On the other hand, some people argue that millennials are not more narcissistic, but
another generation is. One researcher said “every generation worries about the next generation
and thinks that it’s unique to that generation” (Newman, 2018). When the new generation is
thought without values, and the older generation is thought out-fashioned ideas with hopeless
judgment. Yet it is a study claimed that egotistic traits normally changed since 1970s. This also
proves that millennials are not more narcissistic than the older generation (Naftulin, 2019). Some
people think millennials are more self-focused, which turns them into narcissism. However, it is
not true for all millennial ages because depending on age, they become more other focused. For
example, when a millennial is around 10 – 25 years, he / she will tend to focus on self-esteem by
showing beauty or intelligence; but when the millennial is older around 26 – 50 years old, he /
1
she will focus on the other self-esteem such as romantic relationships, work, and parenting. Thus,
millennials are not more narcissistic, they just change the way they focus on themselves. As the
result, it is true that “Every generation is generation me”.
Personally, I believe that young people today are more self-assured than in previous
generations as the rise of technology. Even if narcissism is increasing, the trend does not claim
anything belongs to anyone. It might be easy for other generations to label narcissistic
millennials for everything. What’s harder, but finally more useful, is to sit and deal with the
doubt and consider what else might be causing society’s problems.
