laban Movement Analysis

A framework and notation system

to describe, interpret and document
human movement designed by Rudolf
von Laban - one of the pioneers of
modern dance in Europe in the
late 19th - early 20th century.

Laban's theories include the identification

of 3 main elements of movement:

Sudden Strong Flexible

Time weight space

Sustained Light Direct

Each element consists of two defining

qualities and creates a spectrum for the
texture of movement.
effort actions
Laban used a combination of the 3
elements of movement and their
unique qualities to develop 8 distinct
kinds of efforts used when we are
motivated to move.

Notes
As unique individuals, each one of us
has a 'core' effort action, or a way in
which we instinctively prefer to move.
Do you recognise which one of the
above effort actions is unique to the
way you prefer to move?
