Most important symptoms and effects (acute and delayed):

Symptoms:
Acute: Over-exposure of breathing asbestos may cause asbestosis, Pulmonary fibrosis, and other lung disorders.
Chronic: Diseases associated with over-exposure generally take between 10 – 40 years to become apparent.
Medical examinations and x-rays are required to determine signs and symptoms.

Effects: None identified

SECTION 6 ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Personal precaution
Wash hands prior to eating, smoking, applying cosmetics and using the lavatory; because asbestos can enter the body through the
digestive tract personal hygiene in zoned areas must be given priority. Personal protective equipment shall be worn at all times
when handling asbestos. Avoid inhalation of asbestos dust. Appropriate measures shall be used to remove potentially contaminated
clothing shall be disposed of and shall never leave the working area.
Protective Equipment
See section 8.
Emergency Procedures
Remove person/s from the contaminated area immediately. Use appropriate PPE. If an accident occurs; the area must be
adequately cleaned up and waste disposed of as per Asbestos regulations, 2001. GNR155.

Environmental Precautions
Do not allow to enter drains or watercourses. Do not allow to be disposed of onto soil.
If the product contaminates in of the above-mentioned areas inform the appropriate authorities in accordance with waste
management regulations.

Methods and materials for containment

Spill Kits and wet vacuum methods used when feasible.

Methods and materials for clean-up, neutralization, and recovery

Collect spillage using appropriate methods to ensure no loose fibers are left behind and all material used must be considered as
asbestos-containing waste; all the above waste must be disposed of as per Asbestos regulations, 2001. GNR155.

SECTION 7 HANDLING AND STORAGE

Precautions for safe handling

Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Avoid inhalation of dust generation. Avoid inhaling the fibers
of the material.

Conditions for safe storage

Store and handle in accordance with all current regulations (SABS 0228) and standards.

SECTION 8 EXPOSURE CONTROLS AND PERSONAL PROTECTION

Permissible concentrations OEL Biological limits

Date: n/a Occupational exposure limit of 0,2 No data available
Source: n/a regulated asbestos fibers per milliliter
Recommended test method: n/a of air averaged over any continuous
period of four hours measured in
accordance with MDHS 39/4

NUISANCE DUST:
TWA – 10mg/m3 (ACGIH)

Engineering controls
Provide local exhaust ventilation system to avoid exposure to dust/fumes. Engineering controls must be tested and examined at
intervals not exceeding 24 months by an approved inspection authority approved for that purpose.

Asbestos and its’ associated ingredients don’t have a negative impact on the environment. Asbestos dust can easily travel through
the air into the water supply. It can also settle on the surface of the soil instead of getting absorbed into the ground, which means
that it can still get picked up by the wind and inhaled into human lungs.

SECTION 13 DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

Waste treatment methods

No alternative treatment and no recycling/ reclamation of asbestos-containing waste.

Waste Disposal options

Waste should be disposed of in accordance with local, regional and national regulations.

As per the asbestos regulations:2001;

• All asbestos waste must be placed in containers that will prevent the likelihood of exposure during handling and
transportation;
• All vehicles, re-usable containers or any other similar articles which have been in contact with asbestos waste are
cleaned and decontaminated after use, in such a way that such vehicles, containers or similar articles do not cause a
hazard inside or outside the workplace concerned;
• all asbestos waste which can cause exposure, is disposed of only on sites specifically designated for this purpose in
terms of the Environment Conservation Act, 1989 (Act No. 73 of 1989), and the National Environmental Management
Act,1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998), and in such a manner that it does not cause a hazard inside or outside the site
concerned;
• All persons responsible in the collection, transportation, disposal of asbestos waste, who may be exposed to that
waste, are to be provided with suitable personal protective equipment; and
• Where the services of a contractor for the disposal of asbestos waste are used, a provision is incorporated into the
contract stating that the contractor shall also comply.

Any other information

Waste shall be disposed of according to all applicable regulations. Do not dump into any sewers, on the ground, or into any body
of water. Personnel purchasing items that contain ACM; an alternative material must be found if not it must be clearly made
aware to all personnel working in that area.
