WORKSHEET IN SCIENCE IV
Second Quarter Week 5

Stages in the Life Cycle of Organisms

The life cycle of an animal is the series of forms into which the animal changes as it develops. All animals produce
young of the same kind. The lifecycle of animals can be simple or complex. Animals with simple life cycles are either born
alive or hatched from eggs. Those that are born alive are viviparous. Those that are hatched from eggs are oviparous.
Most have three life cycle stages - before birth, young and adult. Birds, fishes, reptiles, and mammals have simple
life cycles. Amphibians are a bit complicated.
Complex life cycles undergo metamorphosis. Metamorphosis is the process by which animals change in form as
they pass through different stages of development. Metamorphosis can be complete or incomplete. Complete
metamorphosis has 4 stages in their life cycle – egg, larva, pupa, adult. Incomplete metamorphosis has 3 stages in their life
cycle – egg, nymph, adult.
