Which Metals are Magnetic?

Date: 19th March 2020

 Activity 5.1a (can see Learners’ Book page 90)

Things made from Metal

We know some metals: silver, gold, platinum, iron, steel, aluminium, copper, and chromium. Some
things also made from an alloy, the mixture of metals.

Choose as many as you can (minimum 20), some things and search (may use internet or books) what
kind of metals those things made from and fill in the table. Try using a magnet to categorize whether
it is magnetic or not. If you do not have magnet at home, you may search on internet or book for the
reference. Number 1 and 2 are done for you.

2. Name three nonmagnetic metals. Alumunium. Copper, silver
3. Can we separate some metals when it is mixed in the landfill? Yes we can with magnet
4. Describe how you could test the strength of the magnet.
5. Why do we better use magnet to help picking up pins?

4. To test the strength of a magnet, start by using it to pick up one paper clip. Then touch the end
of the paper clip hanging from the magnet to a second paper clip. If your magnet is strong
enough, this paper clip will stick to the first one.

5. Because pins are magnetic so magnet can separete them from the trash.
 Activity 5.1b

Farooq has dropped a box of iron nails in his garage. They have spread all over the floor and under
his Father’s car. His father will be furious if he drives over a nail and gets a puncture.

Farooq then designs and makes a tool using a magnet to pick up the nails. Draw a picture of what
you think Farooq’s tool looks like. Label the parts.

S
Question

1. Why could Farooq pick up the nails with the tool he made?
2. Why does Farooq make a tool not use his hands to pick up the tool?
3. Predict which of these things Farooq can pick up with his tool:
- An empty soft drink can
- A stainless steel teaspoon
- A gold ring
1. Because the nail is magnetic so the nail easy to stick at the tool.
2. Because its sharp, and it will easy with magnet.
