    the topic (clear purpose &
    focus), engages the reader at
    the outset, provides sufficient &
    relevant background information,
    contains clear links between
    statements, and ends with a
    precise and appropriate thesis
    statement.

    B. Mastery of the principles of


    effective paragraph development
    is demonstrated. There is an
    appropriate and effective topic
    sentence for the first body
    paragraph, and sub-points relate
    logically to this topic sentence.
    At least one source is effectively
    integrated to support the claim.
    Illustrations are discussed fully
    and appropriately, and
    unwarranted or uncritical
    assumptions are avoided.

    C. Clear topic sentences begin            


    each section of the body of the
    outline; sub-points follow
    logically from these statements;
    examples also follow logically or
    are clearly identified as such;
    and relationships are obvious a)
    between the topic sentences
