Police corruption is a nationwide problem that has been going on for many years. Not
only is corruption a problem on our own home country, but police practices of corruption go not
only in Asia but in the whole wide world. Many studies, polls and examinations were taken to
find out how exactly what the general publics’ opinions of the police are. Officers receive a lot of
scrutiny over this issue, but for good reason. Corruption was so common in the police unit that
they had standard procedures to cover it up if something went wrong. Police corruption is a
complex phenomenon, which does not readily submit to simple analysis. It is a problem that has
and will continue to affect us all, whether we are civilians or law enforcement officers. Since its
beginnings, may aspects of policing have changed; however, one aspect that has remained
relatively unchanged is the existence of corruption. An examination of a local newspaper or any
police-related publication on any given day will have an article about a police officer that got
busted committing some kind of corrupt act. Police corruption has increased dramatically with
the illegal cocaine trade, with officers acting alone or in-groups to steal money from dealers or
distribute cocaine themselves and these include bribery.
Will our home country ever be able to rid policing of corruption? Is it possible and
plausible to mandate a nations law enforcement agencies to follow all the same rules? Well the
agencies must follow the laws. No matter how many studies are conducted on the different types
of corruption and criminological theories can only offer so much. Various factors like the
officer’s personality can cause him or her to become corrupt. We can never truly stop it, It’s
entirely up to the officer.
