Read the story again and find the answers to the following questions in
the text.
What are Jeremy and Raglan doing in the garbage dump?
They are looking for things to sell or use. They are poor and doesn't work, so they need to
find their food and get their money in another way.
How do you know, based on the text, both Jeremy ang Raglan have experienced violence in
the past? Give examples/sentences from the text.
In the text it says, “There was an old knife slash on his chest; a deep one, with a high ridge of
scar.”. It means Jeremy was probably attacked by someone with a knife.
What does Jeremy mean when he says “I think it’s time (p. 7)?
That he thinks it's time he has a smoke.
Why does Raglan agree not to phone the police and tell them about the dead baby?
Because the police will ask a lot of questions and he will need to call from a payphone which
costs money.
What does Jeremy mean when he says “It gonna hurt a lot, huh” (p. 13)?
B. Reading between the lines Now you are to analyse the short story and make
interpretations, based on the text, of course. You need to motivate your answers, too. How
can we tell that Jeremy is trying to get drugs? Find as much evidence as you can in the story.
Oh: Jeremy sat on the cab floor. He wrapped a strip of inner-tube around his arm.
It was hard to get it right, one-handed. He looked up again. Um ...' Yeah: Raglan
knelt and pulled the strip tighter.” This means he tried to get his veins visible
so he can stick a needle there. So they can take an drug through the blood such as
heroin. Raglan nodded. Yeah. On two a day, that's all: He handed Jeremy the other
cigarette and fired the lighter. Next week it only gonna be one.' He in clouds over held
Raglan's eyes. It gonna hurt some more, huh?' This means that he is trying to stop or at
least lower his drug intake.

------- C. Understanding Literature In “Crusader Rabbit” Raglan explains that he was named
after a cartoon character, (Raglan T. Tiger). The tiger’s best friend was the Crusader Rabbit.
Raglan describes the Crusader Rabbit by saying, “I think he carried a sword, an’ fought
dragons (p.13). What do you think he (Raglan) is trying to say to Jeremy? Why do you think
the author makes this allusion*?
*Allusion is a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical,
cultural, literary or political significance. The tittle of the short you just read is an allusion to
an American animated series Crusader Rabbit produced in the 1950s. The cartoon depicts
the humorous adventures of the heroic Crusader Rabbit, and his sidekick Rags the Tiger
flighting dragons and villains.
