Optimizing Hard disk
Objectives
-Be able to use Disk cleanup
-Be able to scan hard disks for errors
-Be able to defrayments a logical partitions
-Be able to compress files and folders
-Convert FAT/FAT32 file system to NTFS file systems
Disk cleanup
Disk Cleanup is a simple tool to help you cleaning your disk from unnecessary files. It is
recommended to run this tool regularly every month or so.
To launch the tool:
1. Click the Start button
2. Select All Program > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup
3. The following dialog boxes appear:

All of the options are safe but think twice before emptying the Recycle Bin.
OR
1. Right click on Local disk
2. Click on properties
3. Click General tab if not yet selected
4. Click on disk cleanup
OR
1. Open disk management
2. Right click on a partition you are interested in
3. Click on properties
4. Click on Disk cleanup
5. Select all check boxes you wan to clean
6. Click on more options. Click installed programs and remove unnecessary programs
installed
7. Click the system restore point and remove old restore points
To launch disk management
1. Click on start button

2. Click on control Panel


3. Double click on Administrative Tools
4. Double click on Computer Management
5. Click on Disk management on the left task pane
Scanning logical Partitions
Procedures
1. Open Command prompt
2. Type CHKDSK /f and press enter key
3. If a partition is a system partition choose Yes for scanning to occur next time you boot your
computer.
4. Restart your computer properly and observe when the scanning starts.
5. Do his for other partitions too.
Disk Defragmenter rearranges the files saved on disk. This is because sometimes files
are saved not in a single unit but fragmented in several pieces, which increases access time and
reduces performance. It is recommended to run this tool regularly, once every 3 or 4 months.
To launch the tool:
a. Click the Start button
b. Select Program > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
Or
1. Start Windows Explorer
2. Right-click on the disk you want to check
3. Select Properties
4. Select the tab Tools
5. Click on Defragment Now. The following dialog box will be displayed.
Or
1. Click on start button
2. Click on Run command
3. Type cmd and press enter key
4. Type defrag and press enter key

Select the disk to defragment. You can first analyze it to check that the operation is needed
and then click of Defragment.
Compressing Files or folders
Procedures
1. Search a file or folder of size more than 10MB
2. Right click on the folder or file
3. click on properties
4. Click on Advanced button
5. Select the ‘compress contents to save disk space’ choice
6. Click Ok twice
7. Now, compare the size of the file or folder with its uncompressed size.
Converting File Systems
1. Open a command prompt and type the following
2. Convert volume /FS:NTFS and press enter key
3. Insert the volume label if prompted
4. If the partition a system partition schedules it to convert it the next time your computer
restarts.
