• Name of Study Name of Study… Easy one!

• Author of Study Another easy one!
• Introduction: provides background, states the purpose of the research as well as the question(s) the author was attempting to
answer.
• Why did the experimenters decide to do said study? What question(s) were they trying to answer? What was the
hypothesis?
• Method: Describes how the research was conducted, with DETAILS about the study sample, assessment measures and
procedure
• Participants
• Who were they? Male, Female, a certain age? Animal?
• How where they selected? Volunteer?
• Random Sample?
• How many?
• Anything ‘special’ about the participants?
• Materials – what items were required to conduct experiment(s)
• Testing instruments used (maze? An interview? Etc.)
• Equipment
• Books
• Design
• Describe the type of design used – Most studies will tell you (eg double blind) – then define what the design
is…
• Clearly identify your independent variables, dependent variables, control variables and any extraneous
variables that may have influenced your results.
• THIS is so very important!!! Make sure you understand what was being manipulated (clearly
state this – IV) and what was being measured/observed (DV). Remember, only experimental
designs will have an IV/DV… observational research = nothing is manipulated.
• Procedure
• This section details the procedures used in the experiment. Explain what participants had to do (count to 10,
complete a maze, etc), how data was collected (observation? Test scores?) and the order in which the
experiment progressed.
• Results or Findings: A summary of Findings presented in text or table format
• Discussion, Comments or Conclusion: Explains how the results answered the research question and MAY suggest Further
areas for research. THIS is where you are to discuss any ETHICAL concerns (See any potential for harm? Etc.)
• Some of the studies would NOT be able to be completed today… comment why, if so…

• And finally, why is this study seen as one that was influence in the field of Psychology?
• What did the study show us? What important question did it answer? The answer provided isn’t always expected…
