MODULE 2: THE FILIPINO TEACHER

1
I. SESSION 1: SELF-AWARENESS, SELF-MASTERY AND TEACHER AGENCY

Reflection

• Cite significant experience with either your school head, learners, colleagues,
parents, community, that reflects your values. Use the STAR format. (Cite
reference)
S- stands for Situation
T- – stands for Task
A – stands for action
R – stands for result/s

Situation/Task In my current role, teaching learners with

special educational needs specially in children
with Intellectual Disability there was a time
that they really can’t understand what I am
explaining or teaching them. They can’t hardly
grasp the ideas what I’m teaching.
Action Of course, as a teacher, you are responsible on
doing ways and strategies in order for your
learners to understand the lessons you are
teaching them. I used instructional materials
that are suitable for them. I make the lesson
easier for them based on their cases. I created
easier ways to let them familiarized to the
lesson I am teaching and make it enjoyable and
exciting.
Result Day by day, after some one-on-one focus and
practices my learners enjoyed each topic we are
discussing. They are also excited and motivated
to learn more even though they have their
special cases. I don’t give up on them because
having them keeps me realized what are my
roles and responsibilities as their teacher. I
don’t lose hope, however it makes me more
understandable and caring teacher to them. I
am happy on each little achievements they
gained and I am happy for them.

Questions:

1. How do you feel about your self-rating?

Self-assessment and evaluation will help you to make your own

personal and performance improvement plan. The more you improve,
the more your students will benefit. Although it is extremely difficult
to critique one’s own strengths and weaknesses, it is hugely
important.

2. Could you improve/sustain yourself on these?

Yes of course, because as a teacher you should be flexible in

many ways. You should accept the fact that you are also human and
you need to improve yourself for your own betterment. Let these
strengths and weaknesses be your motivation and your guide for you
to become a better person and of course a model to your learners.

3. How do you plan to realize this?

As early as now, keep on motivating yourself to be a better

version of you. Here, we need to take it slow and reflect. What are the
negative sides of you that are needed to develop more and improve.
Also, your positive sides that are needed to sustain and continue to
fulfill it.

7
Reflection
In your journal, write concrete ways that would help you become a better
teacher.

Teachers have the very important responsibility of shaping the lives of

young, impressionable children. With this responsibility comes great pride
and joy. Therefore, all teachers should strive for what can be considered to
be a "good teacher." A good teacher can be defined as someone who always
pushes students to want to do their best while at the same time trying to
make learning interesting as well as creative. A positive or negative
influence from a teacher early on in life can have a great effect on the life
of a child.

Teaching is one of the most important professions in today’s society.

As a teacher, you will shape the minds of others and encourage them to
think independently. To become a good teacher, it’s important to be
organized. Create lesson plans, objectives, activities, and assessment plans
well before each class day. Get your students interested in learning by
fostering a positive, supportive, yet challenging classroom environment.
Seek out other teachers for assistance, too.

SCORING
Add your points using this system:
Always = 2 points Sometimes = 1 point Never = 0 points

0-10 Points: Indicates a need to take control of your finances.

11-15 Points: Reflects a good effort to manage your money effectively.
16-20 Points: Demonstrates ability to manage your finances successfully.

Can you write down your realization?

9
The result of my assessment is 13 points indicates and reflects I have
a good effort in managing my money effectively. Of course as a teacher, let
us be aware on where we spend our money. Let’s think twice before we push
through on it. Keep in mind that every amount you spent is valuable. Before
you take an action in managing personal finances make right decisions on
spending, budgeting, saving, investing, and planning.

Be careful. The kind of life you live depends on the way you handle
your finances. This means that with financial literacy you will be able to live
within your budget to avoid chronic debts and other financial issues. Aside
from that, you can effectively handle your income, expenses, and debts. As a
teacher, we are excited to receive our salary because we would like to share
our blessing and reward ourselves. Sometimes we don’t keep track of what
we are spending thus we end up short of budget and eventually resort to
loans. It is a fact that we are all facing financial concerns every day and to
be able to deal with them all it is necessary to look for other sources of
income. Study and become wiser and skillful.

o In what concrete ways does the session help me become a more health conscious
teacher in promoting a positive health habit?

We keep talking about how important health, hygiene and overall

wellness of a student is and how one must achieve it. The education system
ensures that students, from a young age, are instilled with the idea of
taking in proper balanced diet and having a healthy lifestyle.

Teachers are likely to be the first role models any student would have.
Students tend to walk on their role model’s footsteps and imitate them.
Teachers, who establish a healthy work/life balance, have more energy
and serve as healthy lifestyle role models for their students. Healthy
children are fast learners. Healthy and aware teachers promote healthy
behaviors and practices among students, who then emulate these behaviors
into their own lifestyle and engage in more health-promoting activities.
Hence, one sees a simple two step chain with the philosophy, that whatever
the teacher or role model does is easily adopted by the students.

Stress management is an important aspect that a workplace wellness

program addresses. Schools are dominated by female teachers who have to
devote time and look after students in schools and back home to their own
families. Hectic lifestyles leave employees with no time to look after
themselves.  Hence, wellness programs step in to address issues like lack of
physical activity, stress management, etc.  The adoption of healthy
behaviors results in reducing risks of life threatening diseases and their
associated costs. Also, by reducing the frequency of workplace injuries and
employees falling ill, worker’s compensation claims and medical costs are
reduced, all thanks to the wellness programs.

With the ample benefits that a wellness program offers, the teachers ought
to look after their wellness to become catalysts in changing schools and
communities for the better.

Reflection
Journal Writing
In what concrete ways does the session help me become a more agentive teacher in
promoting gender-fair classroom setting.

Teachers inspire and empower – they can also discourage and impose
limitations, regardless of whether they are making a conscious effort to do
so. In Asia, where millions of girls find themselves either on the sidelines of
education or excluded entirely, this role of teachers in perpetuating or
actively combating gender inequality is especially critical.

The challenge is to strike an appropriate balance of gender roles

between men and women/boys and girls, through education and training,
given that gender, role differences and stereotyping are socially
constructed. Gender equality is a globally recognized development agenda.
Addressing gender issues is a complex process – the issues are often
culturally ingrained, and involve a number of institutions. Gender and
development adopts the principle that development is for all – all humans,
men or women have the right to the same opportunities to achieve a full
and satisfying life. It further recognizes that gender biases impede
development (capacity to do and be).
