1.2 Brief History

The origin of the banking system in Nepal started with the name of Shankedhar, a Sudra merchant of
Kantipur who paid all the outstanding debts in the country. In historical term, there is a story that
Gunkamdev borrowed money in 723 Sambat to reconstruct Kathmandu. In the 11th century, during
Malla regime, Jayanthi Malla developed 64 different classes of caste according to their occupation.

2
During that period, Tankadhari which is a moneylender provided debt. "TejarathAdda” was
established in 1877 A.D. during the tenure of Ranaddip Singh, and it was converted into government
financial institution providing credit facilities to people at low-interest rate of 5 percent. TejarathAdda
distributed credit facilities to the public especially on the collateral of gold and silver, but it didn’t
collect the deposit from the public.

After a long period, the government started t shmeat of Nepal Bank Limited (NBL) in 1937 A.D.
under “Nepal Bank Act, 1937”. It is the first bank in Nepal and prior to this, there was no
such organized banking system in the country. After the establishment of this bank, different
services like accepting deposits, extending credit facilities for promotion of trade, rendering
customer related services and investing in government bond and securities were offered to
general public. This bank also performed agency function and acted as the banker to the
government. In fact, it conducted all the functions of the central banks (except issuance of
paper money) till the establishment of NRB.

Nepal Rasta Bank, the Central Bank of Nepal, was established in 1956, to discharge the
central banking responsibilities including guiding the development of Financial Sectors in
Nepal. Its major aim is to regulate the issue of paper money, secure country wide circulation
of Nepalese currency and stability in its exchange rate, mobilize capital for economic
development and for trade and industry growth; develop the banking system, thereby,
ensuring the existence of banking facilities and generate economic interest in the general
public.

Another commercial bank, Sunrise Bank limited (SRBL), was established in 2007 oct 12,
realizing NBL alone couldn’t extend adequate service to the country in terms of commercial
banking. It had a free hand in the commercial business of the country and this bank solely
handled import-export trade. After the establishment of SRBL, to promote healthy
competition among banks, commercial Bank Act 1974 was amended in 1974. The new policy
allowed joint venture banks with foreign collaboration to operate in private sector with the
objective of introducing modern banking practices and widen the financial structure. With the
introduction of this policy, different commercial banks were established.

The Nepal Arab Bank now NABIL Bank was co-owned by the Emirates Bank International Limited
Dubai, the Nepalese Government and the Nepalese public was the first joint venture bank established
in 1984. Similarly, The Nepal Indosuez Bank now Nepal Investment Bank in 1987 was jointly owned
by the French Banque Indosuez Bank, Nepal Grind lays Bank in 1990 (presently known as Standard
Chartered Bank) etc. some commercial banks in Nepal.

There are no inflexible rules, but banks for the most part open augmentation counters in spots

1.8 Objectives of the Study

10
Internship is the most important part of BBA program. It provides us to gain the practical scenario of
the organization. We can even get to know about the real work experience and depicts the challenges
faced and problems solved. Internships offer us the chance to test our skills in real-life situations,
explore our career options and gain an insight into an organization or career path.

The objectives of internship are:

 To understand the corporate work culture and get adjusted in it.

 To present the understanding of banking organization and its working procedures.
 To observe the general banking procedure and workflow.
 To get close access of utilization of fund by bank.
 To learn about the important document required for collection of fund.

1.9 Methodology

The study is based on both primary and secondary data collection methods. The required information
for the study was taken mainly from the personal interview i.e. formal and informal, website of SRBL,
data provided by Fund Administrator of Retirement Fund.

1.9.1 Sources of Data

The following sources have been used to collect the necessary data:

1.9.1.1 Primary Source of data

The required information was collected through the discussion and information provided by:

 The Fund Administrator of Retirement Fund.

 By Personal observations.
 Discussion with the customer regarding internship.

1.9.1.2 Secondary Source of data

The Secondary data was collected from the secondary Sources like:

11
 Annual report
 voucher
 Strategies and Programs
 official website
 and other publications.

1.9.2 Organization Selection

Internee can select any organization to do intern so; I have selected the Sunrise Bank Limited, Central
Office, Gairidhara, kathmandu for the internship program recommended by BBA, Asian College of
management and Technology, a partial fulfillment of degree of BBA in Purbanchal University. I have
selected SRBL because I got a chance to work in “customer service department” as it gave an
opportunity to study about the KYC and also update KYC in different banks. It also gave me an
insight about how much fund is there in retirement fund and the schemes related to it. For example, to
do meta-analysis of KYC of 28 commercial banks using different parameters to measure it. It allows
us to build on the theory which we have learned at college and helping us to gain practical skills that
will help strengthen our CV and make us more employable also for learning various aspects of
working environment with the aim to build confidence by developing interpersonal and managerial
skill in the real field became a source of inspiration in my professional career.

1.9.3 Placement of Internship

During the internship period of eight weeks I was placed in Sankhamul Office of SRBL, Retirement
Customer service department, I learned about different procedures regarding KYC update in other
banks. In Risk Management and Credit Monitoring department, I analyzed about different types of risk
occurring in different branches of the bank. There Internee have to work under MS- Excel, enter the
various data, calculate them by using various formula which we have provided and gain some practical
knowledge, also able to use our theoretical knowledge in real life being familiarized with the
organizational settings.

1.9.4 Duration of Internship

The duration of internship period has been defined for eight weeks by Purbanchal University. So, I had
completed 2 months in the Sunrise Bank Limited, Central Office. I worked in SBRL from 20 th Oct
20019 to Dec, 19th during this period, I spend few days in analyzing and adopting that environment by
doing some easier work. Later I spend my whole internship in that department by doing various
financial transaction, analyze, calculation which helped me to have insight knowledge gain practical
skills and its working procedure and last few days in collecting the necessary information and data
which could help me in preparing my internship report. Internee was able to learn the bank culture,
work environment and working procedure of SRBL.

1.9.5 Activities Performed in the Organization

During 7 weeks of my internship tenure, I was deployed in Credit Department. CRD is one of
the most important and essential department for each and every bank as it generates the major
income source for a bank i.e. interest income. As the main branch and the head corporate
office are in same building, I got the opportunity to watch the coordination between the
branch and the corporate office. SBL has its tradition to celebrate their staffs birthday, "Daar"
Party and so on. The activities I performed within 7 weeks were based on my acquired
knowledge and intuition. It allowed me to relate my studies in the practical working
environment.

Learnings:

• Coordination and respect among staffs.

• Listen and understand the customers.

• Two-way communication is very vital.

• Dealing with the customer through psycho-analysis

• Brain Storming and Team Work.

13
• Positive Organizational Behavior.

• Motivation and Self motivational techniques.

• Decision making, cognitive learning.

• Following and respecting the work ethics.

1.9.6 Limitation of the Study

The study has to be conducted and submitted within a prescribed time. So, there is a time constraint.
The following are the limitations of the study:

• Lack of time is foremost limitation of this field report writing

• Since the study is based on secondary data, the findings are based on information provided.

• The data and information may not be much in detail due to the security mechanism of the bank.

14
CHAPTER: TWO

OBSERVATION
2.1Corporate Branch

Corporate branch is the where corporate i.e. large amount of loan is managed. Their client is
generally organization corporate branch provide loan more than ten crore. Corporate branch also
provides share loan. Corporate branch provides forex facilities, locker facilities, fill up share with the
help of ASBA. corporate branch is the one of highest deposit collector and also have highest profit.

2.2 Daily Task and Activities

Internship period is that training time where you want to achieve the practical knowledge of
the lessons you learned during your all semesters. Two months interning at Sunrise Bank
Central Office, one of the renowned banks was a journey to learn regarding Corporate
department. Internship in the department made me learn about not only the credit section but
also foreign exchange department and C-ASBA department. The employees were highly
supportive and responded the queries patiently. It was their kind feedback and response
through which assigned task were completed properly and efficiently.
During the internship period, as an intern performed the following various activities:

2.2.1 C-ASBA
ASBA (Applications Supported by Blocked Amount) is a process developed by the India's
Stock Market Regulator SEBI for applying to IPO. In ASBA, an IPO applicant's account
doesn't get debited until shares are allotted to them.
After the completion of the entry in the software system, again some of the data had to be
recorded manually in the employee identity card as well as in the employee file where all the
require information about the staff as well as the designation and transfer details were
maintained. ASBA means “Applications Supported by Blocked Amount”. ASBA is an
application containing an authorization to block the application money in the bank account,
for subscribing to an issue.

15
If an investor is applying through ASBA, his application money shall be debited from the
bank account only if his/her application is selected for allotment after the basis of allotment is
finalized, or the issue is withdrawn/failed.

2.2.3 Foreign Exchange

The foreign exchange market (Forex, FX, or currency market) is a

global decentralized or over-the-counter (OTC) market for the trading of currencies. This
market determines the foreign exchange rate. It includes all aspects of buying, selling and
exchanging currencies at current or determined prices. In this department my job was to fill
up the application forms, check the amount, photocopying the documents and checking if the
documents are sufficient and as per requirements. Also, at the end of the day I maintained the
book where opening and closing balance of the foreign currencies were recorded along with
Nepalese currencies.

2.2.4 Preparation of Margin Call

A margin call happens when a broker demands that an investor deposits additional money or
securities so that the margin account is brought up to the minimum maintenance margin.
A margin call occurs when the account value falls below the broker's required minimum
value. Once every week I prepared margin call sheets with the help of excel of different loan
clients of SRBL.

2.2.5 Filing
All the documents of collateral, pledge acceptance, loan approval Letters, chic reports of the
loan client were maintained under a file.

2.2.6 Printing of Cheques

Cheques of only loan clients were issued in head office so I
performed the activity of issuing cheques to those clients whose loan limit was more than 5
crore and then approving those cheques through the software. This service was not provided
to the general publics.

16
2.2.7 SWOT analysis
During the internship period I performed swot analysis of few companies whose loan
approval was yet to be approved from the loan and some department.

2.2.8 Prepare projected statement for credit analysis

During the internship period I prepare projected income statement and balance sheet for the
purpose of credit analysis

2.2.9 RATIO Analysis

During the internship period I should also prepare ratio analysis to know the overall
performance of the company

2.3 Problem Encountered During fulfilling Work responsibilities

As an internee I have encountered various problems which are listed below: -

 I have assigned responsibility to fill-up share with the help of ASBA and INFOSYS
FINACLE sometimes there are high work overload.
 Problem related to time schedule because of collage time and bank time
 Problem related to non-functioning of various services.
 Someday as a intern assigned more work and someday no work
 During the duration of closing time it’s hard to manage customers need.
 As an internee, I found myself causing several errors while fulfilling the
Forms of customers.

17
CHAPTER-THREE

ANALYSIS AND REVIEW

3.1 Critical Analysis of the theoretical concepts

I have analyzed the data which I gained from both primary sources as well as secondary
sources to make some critical analysis of the bank. Some of them are as follows:
3.1.1 SRBL General and Competitive Environment
No organization exists in isolation. It is affected in one way or the other by the various forces
that occur in the environment. These forces are made up of opportunities and threats. The
environment can divide into main two parts namely the internal environment and the external

CHAPTER-FOUR

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

4.1 Conclusion

Banking industries now have been the most essential component that circulates the necessary products
and services as per the needs of the society. Beside this, bank creates the environment for more
income generation in order to raise the standard of living. The development of the banks has improved
the economic condition of the country. It has helped to improve the economic condition of the people
and provide the security to the funds available to the people.

Sunrise bank Limited is one of the well-known names in banking sector with its 106 Branches, 4
extension counters, 29 branches less banking (BLB) and 121 ATM all over Nepal. The Bank with the
highest public confidence- reflected in the highest deposit base and Growing demand for branch
establishment in various parts has stood as a pyramid in the financial arena of the country. SRBL has
come up with new and more viable strategies to capture Nepalese commercial environment. The bank
has a promising future if it is able to move along the market demand.

Bank operates its business within the society and cannot be isolated. It has certain duties towards
society and the other institutions. Therefore, Rastriya Sunrise is providing to space to the students
from different areas, and has been doing tremendous job as the part of institutional relationship.

For me it was a great exposure to work as an intern at SBL especially in RFD. It brought me the
practical knowledge, able to gain skills and experience in this field. Internee now has both theoretical
and practical knowledge on banking activities. This internship really all helped me to develop the
managerial and interpersonal skills and at the same time boost up the confidence level. During this
period, I learned to perform jobs in a team and to socialize with people.

23
4.2 Lessons Learnt

The internship program is to provide the students a platform and foundation for starting a career in the
field of specialization. Practical knowledge is more important than theoretical knowledge in a sense
that, once the people enter in the real work settings, diverse situation, novel problems, difficulties and
challenges may arise. Dealing with such complexities develops interpersonal as well as
communication skills to shape our personality accordingly, to deal with those types of problem.

 Operating Skills
While working as an intern, I learnt that most of theoretical knowledge has a practical
implication on the banking field. The finance concept, computer application, concept
of law, psychology, human resource management, organization behavior, marketing
communication, business communication,
and many other theories were applied practically.

 Communication Skills
The regular interaction with the people has helped a lot to develop communicating
skills. I came to know about present oneself in front of the staffs and employees in
such a way so that the supervisors feel satisfied in every aspect about their queries that
had been presented. Convincing power to the people increases while dealing with
them. I learnt to deal with various pensioners, commercials as well as other levels
bank staffs.

 Behavioral Skills
I learnt about the behavior of various people who visit and work in the bank during my
internship weeks. The behavior of employees towards customers and superior was
great achievement for me to learn during the internship period. I learnt to behave
friendly, cordially, and respectfully with each and every individual involved in
organization.

 Technical Skills
Before internship I was unable to use any of the technical operators like printers,
scanners, photocopy machine and computers. Hence, I learnt the basic necessary skills
for operating advanced technologies which are important in any organization during
internship period.

24
4.3 Contribution of internship in knowledge gain
As the intern in SRBL, I have learned few other things apart from the skills, which are attitudes
towards the organization and co-workers. Some attitudes that I have learnt during my internship are as
follows:

 Attitude Towards Team Work

I was introduced as a team member and was assigned various activities that had to be
performed in a team. It taught me how activities are to be performed in a team and
impact of behavior of one effect on the work and performance of the team member. I
realized what we studied was real, the proper team work lead to synergy benefits. On
the other hand, loafing of by some team members could lead to huge negative impacts
on the overall team performance.

 Attitude Toward Management

I was committed toward the organization fully throughout the internship. The cordial
and friendly behaviors of management staffs direct my mind to be committed toward
organizational culture and policies. Hence, I was punctual and obedient towards my
work and organization management that helped me to drive positive attitude towards
management.

 Attitude Towards Customers

I showed generous behavior to all the customers who visited the bank. I greeted them
and helped them in any confusion regarding the services provided by the bank. The
customers were too friendly and devoted to help me on my fault. Hence, I had positive
attitude towards customers of SRBL.

25
 Attitude Towards Employees

Each and every credit of my learning during an internship goes to employees of the
bank. They always helped me to progress on my work during my time as an internee.
All the skills that I learned during the internship are the guidance from employees of
the bank, which are vital skills for my successful time ahead. All the praiseworthy
behavior of employees is enough for positive attitudes towards employees.

4.4 Feedback to the organization:

As the organization is categorized in class A bank and is running smoothly some points I would like to
state as feedback are as follows:
• Flexibility in Products: However, SBL has been able to launch products according to the time.
More flexibility is to be brought up. This will help customers to utilize the product to the fullest.
• Advertisement: SBL must consider the latest media of advertisement. Use of social networking
sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter etc. must be boosted. Customer's query must be replied
instantly in Facebook pages.
• Maintain good PR: Sunrise Bank ought to focus on the advertising and ought to make a
symphonious association with the clients. Media is the essential weapon for a wide range of
publicizing and organization ought to keep a nearby tie with the business.
• The staffs whose job role requires frequent contacts with the customers should be
trained to deal in a patient and polite manner.

• The willingness to work should be developed among the employees through effective
incentive plans

• The technologies should be updated as the existing technologies are slowing the
processes.

3.5 Feedback to the college:

The school ought to give the essential information about every one of the divisions, its
extension, and so forth. Prior to the temporary position so that the understudies would think
that it’s simple to choose the association where they might want to assistant. The day and age
for searching for the entry level position was too short for legitimate assessment of decisions.

26
• Understudies needed to pick the less good alternative because of time limitations. The
6/8 weeks' time span for temporary position is insufficient for an understudy.

• It would have been exceptional if the related University and College can give such
temporary job program in the last semester of BBA educational modules with legitimate
introduction program.

• Appropriate directing to the understudies amid their entry level position ought to be
given so that the understudies would know whether whatever they have been learning at their
work coordinate their temporary job targets or not.

• The college ought to consider making school time adaptable for understudies after the
Internship is over in light of the fact that working and increasing pragmatic learning is
similarly essential as hypothetical information.

• Inspire of all I would like to thank to Purbanchal University and Asian college of
Management, for giving such mind-blowing course structure, extremely ace indicating
teachers, and better college environment and giving such passage level position undertakings
to get the learning of organization understudies.
