LEVELING AND WEIGHING − DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General
A. This chapter contains descriptions and procedures to make the aircraft level and to
measure the aircraft weight. The aircraft is made level to do the weighing procedures
and to do some maintenance procedures.
B. The weighing procedures are done to find the total weight and center of gravity of the
aircraft. The weight is measured with the aircraft on jacks. To find the total weight and
center of gravity, the weights measured at each jacking point are added.
C. The equipment that follows is necessary for the leveling and weighing procedures:
± Plumb bob kit, or
± Liquid leveling kit
± Weighing kit.
2. Description
Refer to Figure 1.
A. Plumb Bob Kit
(1) The plumb bob is a pointed weight with a line that attaches to a bracket in the aft
equipment compartment. The bracket is riveted to the top of the fuselage frame at
FS718.00 in the aft equipment compartment. The leveling target is riveted to the
bottom of the fuselage frame vertically below the bracket. The target has a center
mark to which the plumb bob is aligned to make the aircraft level.
B. Liquid Leveling Kit
(1) This kit has two sets of equipment, one for longitudinal leveling and one for lateral
leveling. For longitudinal leveling, the two ends of a plastic, water−filled hose are
attached to leveling scales that are held on supports. The longitudinal scales have
pointers that are aligned with a horizontal datum on the fuselage. For lateral
leveling, the two ends of a plastic water−filled hose are attached to leveling scales
that are hung below the aircraft wingtips.
C. Weighing Kit
(1) The weighing kit is an electronic device that uses load cells (weight sensors)
installed on top of the jacks to measure the weight of the aircraft on each jack.
3. Operation
A. Plumb Bob Leveling
(1) To make the aircraft level, the plumb bob is hung above the target plate at the
bottom of the fuselage frame in the aft equipment compartment. The aircraft is put
on jacks and the height of each jack is adjusted until the plumb bob hangs vertically
above the center mark of the target plate.
B. Liquid Leveling
(1) This procedure uses the property of the same water levels at the two ends of a tube
that is lower at its center. The aircraft is first put on jacks. The longitudinal leveling
scale supports are set in position with the pointers at the level of the horizontal
datum at WL81.55. The lateral scales are hung below the left and right wingtips.
The aircraft nose jack is adjusted until the liquid levels are at the same value on the

longitudinal scale when the pointers align with the datum level. The wing jacks are
adjusted laterally until the liquid levels are at the same value on the lateral scales.
C. Weighing
(1) The aircraft is weighed while on its jacks, clear of the ground, with the landing gear
extended. The weight is measured by the use of the electronic kit. The load cells
are installed on top of each jack. The aircraft is lifted clear of the ground and made
level with the landing gear extended. The weight of the aircraft on each load cell is
recorded to calculate the total weight and the center of gravity.

WHEN YOU SET THE SCALES TO ZERO. IF YOU CHANGE THE
CHOCKS, YOU MUST PLACE THE NEW CHOCKS ON THE SCALES
AND SET THEM TO ZERO AGAIN.
(6) Put the chocks in front of and behind the wheels.
NOTE: Do not set the parking brakes.
(7) Install the plumb bob (Ref. TASK 08−20−00−589−801).
(8) Adjust the shock struts to make the aircraft level (Ref. TASK 08−20−00−589−801).
(9) Weigh the aircraft and write the weight data at each platform scale.
(10) Remove the leveling kit and the chocks, and roll the aircraft off the scales and down
the ramps.
(11) Do a visual check of the zero on each of the three channel displays on the platform
scales. If the displays are set to zero, no change to the weight data is necessary. If
the displays do not read zero, change the weight data as follows:
(a) If you read a positive value, subtract it from the weight data written in step
E. (9).
(b) If you read a negative value, add it to the weight data written in step E. (9).
(12) Calculate the center of gravity as follows:

(a) Find the data you need to calculate the center of gravity.
(b) Calculate the center of gravity.
(13) Find the data you need to calculate the XARM (refer to Figure 203):
(a) Read the nose−landing−gear weight from the scale. Write the result as R1.
(b) Read the main−landing−gear weight from each main−landing−gear scale.
NOTE: The left main−landing−gear gives R (left) and the right
main−landing−gear gives R (right).
(c) Add R (left) and R (right). Write the result as R2.
(d) Divide R2 by 2. Write the result as L.
(e) Add R1 and R2. Write the result as W.
(f) Measure the distance between the weighing datum point and the
main−landing−gear center line (refer to Figure 203). Write the result as B.
(g) Measure the distance between the weighing datum point and the
nose−landing−gear center line (refer to Figure 203). Write the result as D.
(h) Calculate E as follows: 9.525 meters (375.00 inches) + B.
(i) Make sure that the value of E is correct as follows (refer to Figure 204):
1 Locate L on the ground load per main−landing−gear scale.
2 The value shown is an example of what you calculate.
3 Draw a horizontal line to the curve.
4 Draw a perpendicular line from this point on the curve and read the
wheel−axle center line location such as point E.
NOTE: Make sure that the value for E is correct. This value should be
the same as the E value measured in Figure 203.
(j) Calculate F as follows: 9.525 m (375.00 in.) − D.
(14) Calculate the aircraft XARM with the value specified in paragraph (13) as follows:
(a) Calculate the necessary value:
For SI units (R1, R2, and W are in kilograms and E and F are in meters):
(F × R1) + (E × R2)
AIRCRAFT CG (XARM) =
W
(b) Convert this value to % MAC:
For SI units (R1, R2, and W are in kilograms and E and F are in meters):
(XARM) − (12.542)
AIRCRAFT CG (% MAC) = × 100
2.526
(15) Move the aircraft off the scales (Ref. TASK 09−10−00−584−801).
(16) Remove the wheel chocks.
(17) Do a visual check of the zero on each of the three channel displays on the platform
scale and correct the indications as necessary.

LEVELING − MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

1. General
A. This maintenance procedure supplies instructions to make the aircraft level when it is on
jacks or on its landing gear. When the aircraft is on jacks, it is made level by the
adjustment of the jacks. (It is not necessary to lift the aircraft off the ground to level it.) If
jacks are not available, the aircraft can be made level by the adjustment of the
landing−gear shock struts.
