Millennium Actress
Watching Millennium Actress took me on a lightyears journey. That was a lot of Era to
cover and I’ll be honest my mind was not able to keep up. I felt disoriented with so much
happening and changing, emotions bombarding every scene and running that literally
everything was a blur. I consider not continuing because I was too sleep deprived for my mind
to make sense of what was happening. Nevertheless, I stayed because I don’t want to waste
this bonus point but more importantly I wanted to know what drove Chiyoko to tirelessly chase
the shadow of a man she met when she was young. I’ve only ever known romantic love through
books. You can categorize me as the person who has not been in a relationship since birth and
sure I had crushes , but never to that extent where all my life I would seek their presence.
That’s why I stayed , I want to know Chiyoko’s reason , I wanted to live vicariously through her
and find out the meaning of devotion. And she certainly showed me.
Her entitlement as a millennium actress is because of the countless movies she starred
in with settings of different times and her expertise and popularity that she would be
remembered for millennia. However in my heart, the millennium in her identity is the deep love
and hate she held for that one nameless man. Ever since she was young , her old age and up
until her deathbed she invariably loved him. Him , the one who bumped into her and offered his
hand to once again bring her back to her feet. Him, that promised that he will show Chiyoko a
place pure with snow and serenity that they’ll feel they are in another, strange world. Him, that
promised that he will take her to see the starry, starry sky. Him, that promised they will meet
again. Chiyoko strongly gripped these fleeting memories and promises and lived her life
dictated by the love and longing she felt for the man that provided all of this to her.
It’s always fascinating for me to meet characters with so much passion in their bones
because compared to me I live my life fleetingly. I barely remember what I ate this morning nor
am I invariably interested in something. Especially in our current situation, time passes so quick
then slow that I just leave it alone and let it freely take whenever state or place. But with
Chiyoko, all the time she spent living she moved with determination to find the one she loves. It
was both heartwarming and devastating. Love is wonderful but let’s not deny it turns us stupid
- and deep down Chiyoko knows this. The wraith that put a curse in her is actually her
subconscious telling her that she does love the man but at the same time she invariably hates
him for leaving her. However, the most highlight of all, she hated herself for going to that
extent to chase after a man she barely knew. Curse her young and fragile heart for attaching
itself to something so otherworldly and so out of grasp. Truthfully, it made me mad that even at
the throes of death Chiyoko said that she will continue to look for him. I don’t see that as
romantic at all , she succumbed to the curse she inflicted herself and smiled at her last
moments as if that was a nice thought. Nope, that was not for me, but I do get the appeal of
love going beyond life and reality itself that even if we are merely human beings we have
something that’s on par with the colossal existence of the universe.
I aforementioned that I got a bit disoriented with the movie and it was because of the
continuous shift of scenes of one after another. The Millennium Actress had a good transition. I
will not deny it , it was because of me and my sleep deprived self that I did not appreciate
enough because my eyes were spinning. It was seriously creative to use the movies where
Chiyoko played a part in to storytell to the audiences the journey and emotions she had
undergone when she was looking for the man all her life. The different eras represent the
amount of time she spent looking, longing and hoping that someday at some place they will
once again bump into each other. The different situations of each movie represents the
obstacles she had to go through in her life and even depicts the current situation at that time ,
war, rebellion and such. Each time, she runs with hopeful gleam in her eyes but every.time
she's thrown into another dimension implying she has not succeeded in reaching the man at
that point in time. Additionally, the two characters , the cameraman and the producer being in
the same place as the past of Chiyoko is incredibly well thought. For it adds to the innovative
techniques incorporated in the movie by putting present time characters, speaking in present
time dialogues in a historical scenarios to engage the audiences who's watching at present time
the turmoil of each scene and gives them the sense that this is all just a fiction story exchange
between characters narrated in a very intense and interesting way. Thus, I can say that
Millennium Actress effectively used the medium of animation well. It did not hold back at its
visual backdrops and transition to give the audience a ride to the emotional rollercoaster that
Chiyoko underwent. Each scene smoothly connects with one another and the scene wherein
the s Chiyoko rode the spaceship then lifting off to outer space implying that she’s ready to
leave the life she has lived is a good use of animation showing a metaphorical meaning.
Millennium Actress is a good animated movie. The amount of changing scenery in it would cost
millions of dollars or dare I say billions when done in another medium of movie production. The
movie will run about 3 hours at most if it was done in real live action but because of the magic
of animation, frames of each scene can be cut down shorter giving more ample space for
animators to include more profound scenes to convey the value and lessons they want to
impart to their audience. Also, they are able to exercise a range of their creativity because they
are in control of the characters so whatever they want them to do , the characters will
invariably do it. That’s all I wanted to say for this wonderful movie , thank you Sir for giving us
the opportunity to come across good documentaries, comics and movies.
