Experiment 3: Measurement and Control of Air Flow System Objective
OBJECTIVE
1. To study gas volumetric flow rate (Fv) measurement using the orifice plate-pressure drop
(h) method, assuming the gas pressure/temperature (i.e. density) remain unchanged and
at the values used in the sizing of the orifice.
2. To study gas mass flow rate (Fm) measurement using the orifice plate-pressure drop (h)
method, using the Perfect Gas Law to compute the gas density from the flowing pressure
and temperature.
3. To study gas mass flow rate (Fm) control using PID control mode.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
1. Switch ON the panel
2. Set the valve accordingly to the table below
OPEN CLOSE
MV1-MV3 MV4-MV5
MV6-MV7 MV8
MV9 MV10-MV11
MV12 MV13-MV14
MV15 MV16
MV17-MV18 MV19-MV22
MV23 MV24-MV25
MV26 MV27
MV28-MV29 MV30
MV31 MV32-43
3. Put the controller FIC-91 to manual mode and set the SV to 15kg/hr
4. Set the first trial PID value ( Trial 1 ) accordingly to the table below
5. Regulate the MV so that the PV fluctuate at set point and let the process stabilize for a few
minutes.
6. Switch ON the chart recorder
7. Put the controller FIC-91 to Auto mode then quickly Introduce a pulse load disturbance by
opening the MV8 by one turn for 5s
8. Put back the MV8 to normal position
9. Observe your result at chart recorder. Wait until the PV stabilizes at set point.
10. Complete your table at result and discussion
11. Repeat step 3-10 for trial PID value, trial 2 and 3.
12. Put the controller TIC-92 to Auto mode and set the SV to 1000C
13. Switch ON heater and let the PV stabilize at 1000C
14. Repeat step 3-10 for trial 4
15. Compare your result

QUESTION
1. What is your observation based on data trail 1,2,3 and 4 ? What is the relationship
between these three data?
2. What is the significant the introduction a sharp pulse load disturbance?
3. Why PI controller is used instead of PID controller in this process? From your own
understanding, how far the performance of the process if PID controller is applies on
the process?
