The gold ring

Sixteen-year-old Monika Levin lives on a farm in the north of Sweden with
her family. One day, about ten years ago, Monika was in the kitchen with
her mother, Ulrike, and they decided to make a cake together. At the time,
Ulrike was wearing the gold ring which her husband gave her when they
got married.

Monika remembers that her mother wanted to keep the ring clean, so she
took it off her finger and put it on the kitchen table. But after they put the
cake in the oven and tidied up the kitchen, they saw that the ring was
gone! They looked everywhere – on the floor, behind the cupboards – but
couldn’t find it.

Last weekend, the Levin family had a big surprise. Ulrike grows a lot of
fresh food in her garden, and one day, when she needed some carrots for
the family’s dinner, she went out to get some. A short time later, Monika
heard a loud shout from the garden, and she ran outside.

In the garden Monika found her mother holding a small carrot, about the
size of a finger. And, believe it or not, the carrot was growing inside her
mother’s gold ring! There is only one problem – Ulrike’s fingers are now
too fat for the ring. But she is very happy to have her ring back, and she’s
going to look after it carefully from now on and make sure it doesn’t get
mixed up with rubbish from the kitchen.
