TRANSPORT TO CONTESTS
Hi Andrew,
First of all, congratulations on AeroModeller - a good mix to suit all
interests. I particularly like the O’Donnell/Hipperson ‘Better…’ articles, as a
(very) old balsa and tissue man myself.
Dave’s reference in the March AeroModeller to modes of transport to
contests made me think back to the Cardiff club in the late forties and early
fifties. One of our members, Les Webber, was partner in a large architectural
practice. He would roll up to the flying field in an SS Jaguar (this was before
Jaguar dropped the ‘Swallow Sidecar’ bit from their name.) Another visitor
to our field was Squadron Leader Bill Verney, who was stationed at RAF
St. Athan. He arrived in a Bentley of early twenties vintage complete with
running boards, outside handbrake and of course in British Racing Green!
To cap the lot, we were at an Area Centralised event on Fairwood
Aerodrome Swansea in the early fifties when Dick Twomey arrived in (I think)
a Piper Cub which he had flown from Cardiff, bringing another cub member,
Jonny Woodhouse as passenger. However, neither brought a model so
perhaps it would not count as transport to a contest?
Best wishes, John Phillips

With an eye on the International Indoor
Fly-In at Nijmegen in November, I needed
a new Peanut model; I don’t like using
the same model repeatedly if I can help
it and, in any case, the Halberstadt
was now a pile of struts and broken

Luton Minor from the excellent Andrew
Moorhouse design of many years ago. I
did one back in the 70s and remember
flying it somewhere like Crawley. It is a
very simple design and will lose static
marks right left and centre. However, as
a first such model, it cannot be beaten.
I am certainly not going to give advice
on building a winning Peanut model This is the Luton Minor fuselage mask cut from a piece of 18mm Tamiya tape. Not as tricky as it might look.
