STEVE WEBB
MODELS – 30
YEARS IN BUSI-
NESS
At a time when the number of real
model shops is declining, it is great
to celebrate the long-term success of
Steve Webb Models.
Opened in 1987, Steve Webb Models
is a traditional model shop, based in the
market town of Frodsham, Cheshire.
Affectionately known as “Webbies”,
Steve Webb Models celebrated its 30th
birthday on February 14th 2017, and is
still very much a family business, with
longstanding and helpful staff.
In the early 1990s, the distribution of
Enya Engines was brought on board,
through Enya UK Sales. The distribution
of the World Models range of kits and
accessories was added shortly after.
Both of these ranges are still available
from Steve Webb Models today.
Created in the early 2000s, www.
servoshop.co.uk introduced the supply
of servos and accessories online, but
has expanded hugely and now over
7500 Radio Control related products
are available online. The ServoShop
online store has now become the one-
stop-shop for modellers and hobbyists,
as well as industrial and scientific
businesses, Film and Theatre Prop
makers, and special effects and movie
animatronics makers.

Steve Webb and his sister Ann-Louise

celebrate 30 years of retailing to
aeromodellers.

BRUMFLY 2017 – BMFA, SCALE, SAM 35 AND SPORTS FF

This year’s Brumfly is on Saturday May 20th 09.00 on North Luffenham. The traditional July date is no longer feasible because the
grass on the field is now left uncut for haymaking.
Brumfly classes will be: E 36, Mini Vintage, F1H (A1), Combined HLG/Catapult, Combined F1J/BMFA 1/2A, and Combined
A2 (single contest for models conforming to F1A specification with three for overall winner, highest placing using non-bunting
model(s) and highest placing using design(s) published prior to January 1961.)
Once again Bill Dennis will be running scale classes, for details contact [email protected]
There will also be SAM 35 events run by John Ashmole including Rubber and Power Precision and Cloud Tramp duration,

Sport flyers (FF only) and those keen to get in some pre-Nats trimming are welcome (you must be a BMFA member), £5 airfield

us to completely block the Again model engineer par-excellence Tom Crompton has
given his support in the development of the Twin Fin, but
ultimately it is Alex who we have to thank for driving the
project and producing this small miracle - at an amazingly
affordable price given the work that goes in to it.
Most production diesel twins such as the Taplin and the
CS Boddo have been inline rather than opposed cylinders.
P.A.W. have recently produced a limited run of 15 of their
38 Twin Diesel with opposed cylinders from their 0.19ci
engine (review in #946 March 2016 AeroModeller). Even
John S Oliver experimented with various twin cylinder
engines in both aligned and opposed configurations, but
none made it in to production - it took CS with their Tiger
copy to produce an inline diesel of 5cc in any numbers. All
of these engines are significantly larger (thus giving more
leeway for tolerances) than the 1cc total Redfin Twin Fin
060.
Alex Phin is to be applauded for his development of the
Twin Fin. One only wonders if there is another turn of the
wheel to come? Discussion at AeroModeller Towers has
been around whether the Twin Fin could be called a Boxer
configuration engine, as it is unclear whether there should
be at least two cylinders on each side to qualify as a Boxer.

TRANSPORT TO CONTESTS
Hi Andrew,
First of all, congratulations on AeroModeller - a good mix to suit all
interests. I particularly like the O’Donnell/Hipperson ‘Better…’ articles, as a
(very) old balsa and tissue man myself.
Dave’s reference in the March AeroModeller to modes of transport to
contests made me think back to the Cardiff club in the late forties and early
fifties. One of our members, Les Webber, was partner in a large architectural
practice. He would roll up to the flying field in an SS Jaguar (this was before
Jaguar dropped the ‘Swallow Sidecar’ bit from their name.) Another visitor
to our field was Squadron Leader Bill Verney, who was stationed at RAF
St. Athan. He arrived in a Bentley of early twenties vintage complete with
running boards, outside handbrake and of course in British Racing Green!
To cap the lot, we were at an Area Centralised event on Fairwood
Aerodrome Swansea in the early fifties when Dick Twomey arrived in (I think)
a Piper Cub which he had flown from Cardiff, bringing another cub member,
Jonny Woodhouse as passenger. However, neither brought a model so
perhaps it would not count as transport to a contest?
Best wishes, John Phillips

characteristic arched tip camber, and
the airbrakes at the lower wing roots are
faithfully reproduced. As for the dozens
of riblets, thank goodness for laser-

The 1/8” sq leading edges are over-
sized for the job, and 3/32” sq would
suffice. Indeed most of it needs to be
sanded away but I assume this was done
so that the bottom edge can rest directly
on the plan. The only modification to the
wings that I suggest is to add extra wood
to the inside of ribs in danger of being
pulled in by the covering. These areas

could be cyano’d to the trailing edge to
good effect, but I did not do this.
I then turned to the nose. The heart
of the arrangement is a small plywood
box which, like everything else, locks
together ready to be cyanoed. Opposite
ends have holes for two plastic bearings;
one is offset for side and downthrust.
The box fits into a close-fitting hole in
the front former and carries a 3D-printed
dummy rotary crankcase, which needs
some finishing, such is the nature of
this technique. The shaft needs to be
substantial because that box is not going
to pop out on landing.
I put the undercarriage together just
for the photo, and it is my favourite
part. With little effort you end up with an
accurate structure that looks just right.
The vacform wheels are also just-so.
I now have a very few bits left on the
lasercut sheets, so I must be nearly
there. The simple structure of the Luton Minor makes it an ideal first Peanut.

With an eye on the International Indoor

Moorhouse design of many years ago. I
did one back in the 70s and remember
flying it somewhere like Crawley. It is a
very simple design and will lose static
marks right left and centre. However, as
a first such model, it cannot be beaten.
I am certainly not going to give advice

There is plenty of detail of Beurling's
early life and his efforts to gain a place
in air combat. His exploits over Malta
are graphically described, with sufficient
detail to explain his victories. To quote
co-author Roberts: “His marksman-ship
was nothing short of miraculous. Every
one of his bag (30, 18 over Malta) had
been shot down by a single burst from
his Spitfire's guns, often by a staccato
one-second squirt. Virtually every enemy
aircraft had been the victim of pure
deflection shooting”
Back to Beurling: “I did another quick,
tight whip-over behind them (109's) and
got in a hurry-up deflection shot on the
fellow on the port side. He was set up
perfectly for just such a shot, almost
exactly 300 yards away in the sights.
That meant he'd take the whole load of Power pod in situ. Poor-performing 6” drone props in place. Motor and Supercap switch selectors

the bead. Luckily I was. The whole burst
must have gone squarely into his tank
and engine. He blew just as if there'd
been a charge of dynamite in the cockpit.
Pieces were flying all around the sky. The
fuselage burst into a sheet of flame. No
question what happened to him!”
Thirty seconds later he repeated the
feat: scratch two Me 109s. “A one-
second burst into the engine settled him.
The hood flew off the cockpit, apparently
jettisoned by the pilot. The engine began
to spew smoke. He rolled onto his back
and baled”
I always look for tactics as the most
interesting part of this type of book. They
