 Short Historical Account

It was not until September 18, 1581 when the Augustinian mission was fully and officially
established in the village of Hamtic, which is with a Royal Decree making it a parish or
putting up a religious house or convent under FR. MIGUEL DE FIGUEROA, OSA and
this marked the birth of Christianity in Antique. In June 19, 1962, Antique became an
independent ecclesiastical province and on that same day, the MOST REV. CORNELIUS
DE WIT, MHM was consecrated and installed in the capital town of San Jose and became
the first prelate of the newly erected Prelature. In 1981, the Local Church of Antique
celebrated its 400 years of Christianity. A big celebration was made in the Parish of Sta.
Monica, being the seat of Christianity in the Diocese. One of the remarkable benefits of this
celebration according to Bishop de Wit is “Being refreshed in awareness of our own history.
This rich heritage has a message for us and that we are challenged to remain faithful as
Antiqueños and Christians in the years to come.” The Local church have celebrated its
Golden Jubilee last 2012 and now, after 8 years of Bishop Lazo serving the church, Most
Rev. Marvyn Maceda was installed as the 5th Bishop of Diocese of San Jose de Antique.

 Historical Timeline

It all started on September 18, 1581. From 1596-2018 are the time where all the different
parishes in Antique was established, the arrival of the Mill Hill Missionaries in the
Philippines in 1906, the MSLT founded in 1962, the establishment of the different Catholic
Schools in Antique, Prelature elevated to the Diocese of San Jose de Antique in 1982,
appointing of bishops, AMC was founded and many more. 2019 was the year of the
appointment of Bishop Maceda as the 5th Bishop of the Diocese of San Jose de Antique.

 Bishops and Clergy of Antique

There were 5 Bishops who served the local church with Bishop Cornelius Henricus De Wit
as the first bishop and Bishop Marvyn Abrea Maceda as the current bishop of the Diocese
of San Jose de Antique. There were only 2 Antiqueño who became bishops, Archbishop
Jose Romeo Orquejo Lazo who was the fourth bishop of the Diocese and Bishop Jose
Salmorin Bantolo who was the second bishop of the Diocese. The Antiqueño Diocesan
Clergy are composed of 58 priests. The Mill Hill Missionaries are composed of 3 priests.
The Eucharistic Healers of Mary are composed of 4 priests.
