1. introduction
1.1 introduction
KNX
● KNX is a bus system
● KNX is a world standard

 Foundation: 1990
Under the name ‘EIB Association’
 1999
Merger with two other associations (Batibus and EHS)
 Goals
• Open standard protocol for home and building control
• establishing the KNX Trademark as a token for quality and multi-vendor
interworking
• Establishing KNX as a European and worldwide standard.
1.2 Activities of KNX Association

 Further technical development and promotion of KNX standard together with KNX member companies

 Further development of the common design and commissioning tool software called ETS

 Sales and support of ETS via KNX website

 Granting KNX certification for KNX compatible products

 Promotional activities ( website, fairs, brochures,…etc)

1.3 Success of KNX

500 KNX members

8000 Products
515 KNX training centres

5.2 KNX Cable Specification
 KNX Media: Twisted pair cable,

 KNX cable : 0.8 sq. mm, Twisted pair & Shielded

 Due to high electric breakdown strength, possible to lay

power and communication cables in the same trunking

5.3 Bus connector

Bus connector Usage

 Joints, extensions or connections are realised by means of

bus connectors

 Bus cable shall only end either at the device itself or at this
terminal

 Removal of bus devices without interrupting the bus

 Mechanical protection against reverse polarity
