MICA Quiz – The Crane Wife of Hokkaido Pt. 1 Resources: “Generation Z Stereotyped” informational text,

 This text discusses generational identity which is Technology: iPads
a similar theme of our extended reading, The
Outsiders. This text will be used to further Assessment: Text dependent questions, Graphic Organizers,
develop the students’ definition of identity. MICA Quiz
(Essential questions)

 Students will be asked to analyze the organization


of the text to determine central ideas and evidence
by annotating in the margins of the text while I
complete a 1st read aloud for the class. Students
will be instructed to write the “gist” of each
paragraph on the side. (We will also be discussing
the vocabulary words: garnering, apathetic.
characterizations, priorities, and sedentary.)
Students will use context clues to jot down a brief
definition of each vocab word on the sides as well.

 Next, students will be assigned partners. The


partners will read the text closely for a 2nd time
with some guiding questions. We will also discuss
how each section of the text contributes to the
central idea of the text. We will also discuss how
this lesson fits in with the theme of identity from
The Outsiders.

 We will read chapter 2 as a class and discuss the
text as we go. Technology: None

 Students will complete text dependent questions. Assessment: Text Dependent Questions
If time permits, students will work on character
posters.

MICA Quiz – The Crane Wife of Hokkaido Pt. 2 Resources: CommonLit.org, “Frank Abagnale”

“Frank Abagnale” (1250L) movie trailer, MicaTime.com
 Frank Abagnale (born 1948) lived a life of
deception, conning people for years in order to Technology: YouTube video, iPads
gain money and power. When he was eventually
caught and arrested, he only had to serve five Assessment: TN Ready Questions, Discussion, MICA Quiz
years before the FBI decided to let him out early
to help them identify other cases of fraud. As we
read the article below, we will discuss what makes
someone who they are—both figuratively and in
the eyes of the law and relate it to the theme of
identity in The Outsiders.

trailer. I will pair this clip to show students how
Abagnale is portrayed in film. Can you detect his
anxiety? How does the filmmaker reveal
Abagnale’s gift for impersonation? What else
does the film suggest about Abagnale’s
motivation?

Bellringer – Journal Prompt Resources: The Outsiders

 Finish reading chapter 2; begin reading chapter 3.
We will discuss the text as we go. Assessment: Text Dependent Questions

 Title Chapters 1 and 2 in Folder and turn in text

Figurative Language Resources: The Outsiders, Literary examples


 Metaphor + Simile Lesson
Technology: Powerpoint
 Poem Analysis to Model Figurative Language
Analysis. Assessment: Figurative Language analysis, Character posters

 Students will do a 2nd close reading analysis of


Chapter 1 looking for metaphors and similes.
Students will fill out a graphic organizer and
explain the figurative meaning using textual
evidence and literal explanation. If time permits,
students will work on character posters.
