Steve Jobs
Read the passage. Then answer the questions.
Steven Paul Jobs was an American information technology entrepreneur and inventor. He was the co-
founder, chairman, and chief executive officer (CEO) of Apple Inc. Steve Jobs was born on February
24, 1955, he was adopted at birth in San Francisco, and raised in San Francisco Bay Area during the
1960s. As a boy, Jobs and his father worked on electronics in the family garage, Paul showed his son
how to take apart and reconstruct electronics. A few years later, while Jobs was enrolled at
Homestead High School, he was introduced to his future partner Steve Wozniak. In 1974, Jobs took a
position as a video game designer with Atari. In 1976, when Jobs was just 21, he and Wozniak started
Apple Computer. Jobs and Wozniak are credited with revolutionizing the computer industry by
making machines smaller, cheaper, and accessible to consumers. Jobs in charge of marketing Apple
initially marketed the computers for $666.66 each. The Apple I earned the corporation around
$774,000. Three years after the release of Apple's second model, the Apple II, the company's sales
increased by 700 percent to $139 million. Jobs left Apple in 1985 to begin a new hardware and
software enterprise called NeXT, Inc. The following year Jobs purchased an animation company
which later became Pixar Animation Studios. The studio merged with Walt Disney in 2006, making
Jobs Disney's largest shareholder. In 1996, Jobs returned to his post as Apple's CEO. Jobs put Apple
back on track. Apple introduced products as the Macbook Air, iPod and iPhone, all of which have
dictated the evolution of modern technology. In 2008, iTunes became the second-biggest music
retailer in America. In the early 1990s; Jobs met Laurene Powell and they married on March 18, 1991,
and lived in Palo Alto, California, with their three children. Jobs was diagnosed with a pancreatic
neuroendocrine tumor in 2003 and died of respiratory arrest related to the tumor on October 5, 2011.

Expressing Likes and Dislikes
To talk about your likes and dislikes, you can use these expressions.
Expressing likes:
I like… I adore… I’m mad about…
I love... I ‘m crazy about… I enjoy…

Expressing dislikes: I abhor… I loathe..
I don’t like… I can’t bear...
I dislike... I can’t stand…

Examples of likes and dislikes :

Things to remember about likes and dislikes:

1. When these expressions are followed by a verb, the latter is put in the -ing form.
Examples:
"I like listening to music."
"I hate wearing sunglasses."

2. Note that" very much" & " a lot" always come after the things you like.

Examples:
"I like basketball very much/a lot. NOT" I like very much/a lot basketball."
3. Be careful when you use "I don't mind..."
Examples:
"Do you mind playing football?"
"No, I don't mind."(Although it's in a negative form, it means that it's ok for me. I neither love it nor
hate it.

If you neither like nor dislike something, you may use the below expressions:
1. I don’t mind doing house work: ‘don’t mind’ is used to express that you are okay with the idea of
doing something.
2. I don’t really care either way: If you are given a choice of going to the cafe or for a movie; and if
you are okay with both the options or can’t make up your mind, you use this phrase.
3. It’s all the same to me: You say this when you are uncertain about the options given to you. They
all sound the same and you can’t choose.
When you hate something, it means it is beyond your tolerance level and you can’t
put up with it.
1. I can’t stand my boss: ‘can’t stand’ is used to express how much you hate your boss.
2. I detest being late : ‘detest’ is way of saying extreme hatred and you can’t put up with something.
3. I can’t bear watching golf: ‘can’t bear’ means you just can’t tolerate watching golf.

4. I loathe bacon: ‘loathe’ is used to say you feel disgusted about something.

Practice Exercise

Underline expressions of likes and dislikes and replace them with other verbs or
phrases.

Expressing Dialogue:

Steve is at home. His mom comes in...Notice how they express their likes and dislikes

Steve: Hello, mom. Do you fancy watching a film tonight?


mom: Oh, no thanks, I don't really feel like watching a film tonight. How about going out instead.
Steve: OK. Do you feel like going to the theater?
mom: Oh, no. I can’t stand it. Do you like eating at the new Chinese restaurant?
Steve: I would appreciate it. The Chinese cuisine is alright.
mom: Well I really like it. Let's go.

time or an action or event that is finished (over)

-The present perfect links past and present.


1. One action which started in the past has got consequences in the present.
The crash has been so strong, I’m almost deaf.
2. The present perfect is used also to show interest in fact , without a time reference.
