RAISED UP
TO A NEW HOPE

October 1, 2020
Over the past six months, we’ve all heard hundreds of times that this period of time is unparalleled, unique, ex-
traordinary, unprecedented, bizarre and exceptional. It has certainly not been like anything any of us have lived
through. None of us ever expected that we would have to plan for the Triduum without a congregation or move
the Chrism Mass to October; ordinations with only the parents of the ordinand in attendance, and Masses held
outside. Processions, the Sign of Peace, Communion under both Species, and singing have all been sup-
pressed, and in many dioceses the faithful have been dispensed from the obligation to go to Mass for more
than six months, with no end in sight. And at the same time we have been confronted with the racial inequality
and injustice throughout our country.
During this time I have been more grateful than ever for the FDLC. The prayer services and access to Vatican
and USCCB pronouncements have been helpful, but more important has been the support of the members for
one another, answering each other’s questions on the listserve, and sharing resources – particularly for how to
creatively reopen churches and have Masses in a time of pandemic and social distancing.
Our theme for today is “Raised up to a New Hope” from the fourth Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various
Needs. May today allow all of us to be renewed in hope, faith and love as we continue to serve God’s people.

Dear Colleagues,
When we gathered in Chicago to celebrate the FDLC’s fiftieth anniversary, we reminisced about our accomplishments, as-
sessed the present state of liturgy, and dreamed about the future work of the Federation. We made plans to see each other
again in San Diego and to study the role of sacred architecture and the rite with which we dedicate our sacred spaces.
And then things changed. Overnight, the world was faced with a dangerous pandemic, pastoral practices were reimagined,
and our usual plans were shelved. With the health and safety of our members as priority, we renegotiated hotel contracts,
designed a whole new program, and learned all new technologies.
So our fifty-first gathering will look and feel a little differently. We have telescoped a three-day meeting into one; we have
moved regional caucuses to another day; and we will meet over a computer screen instead of at a distant hotel. But still,
we gather. Still, we applaud the value of networking and the gifts of our members. Still, we appreciate the need for study
and the duty to praise God in prayer.
I extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who made this possible. Thank you to the Core Planning Team who met over
countless Zoom meetings and e-mails to prepare every detail and every minute of this online event – Laura Bertone, San-
dra Kearney, Michael Poradek, John Michael Reyes, and Tony Varas. Many thanks to our corporate sponsors and individual
donors -- in these difficult financial times, they made it possible to offer free registration when many could not have other-
wise attended. I remain grateful for the continued collaboration of the Bishops’ Committee on Divine Worship and to the
Secretariat staff. Thank you to all the speakers and liturgical ministers who have tackled new challenges, have generously
given their time, and have graciously shared their gifts.
Yes, our Federation, our country, and our world have faced many challenges. But we have never been alone -- our God has
been with us every step of the way. So we are, indeed, “raised up to a new hope.” May this time together, in His presence,
equip us to bring that hope to a world in need of it.
Blessings,
Rita A. Thiron

1. Through flowing tears: Alleluia.
Through growing fears: Alleluia.
Through the weariness of now,
we still find the voice somehow
to sing Alleluia.
Still we sing Alleluia.

Open our eyes
to the needs of our brothers and sisters;
inspire in us words and actions
to comfort those who labor and are burdened.
Make us serve them truly,
after the example of Christ and at his command.
And may your Church stand as a living witness
to truth and freedom,
to peace and justice,
that all people may be raised up to a new hope.
