Definitions/explanations:

1. Clockwork- it is a mechanism with springs and gearwheels used to drive mechanical


clock, toy, etc…
2. Springs - spiral of metal/steel used to power clocks and clockwork mechanisms
3. Cogwheel - a toothed wheel, it helps to change the speed or the direction of a
movement
4. Gear - a toothed wheel which works with other mechanisms to change the speed of a
mechanism
5. Pendulums - a pendulum is a weight at the end of something like a rod or chain, so it
can swing freely
6. Tempered Steel - a steel which has been treated with heat below its melting point
7. A balancing wheel oscillating to and fro - a balancing wheel going to and coming
back (back and forth)
8. Townsfolk - town's people, people who live in the town
9. Bells shifting restlessly in the church tower – bells ringing as they move in the
wind

others. It can also mean someone might fly into fits of rage
17. Optimist - someone who is always hopeful
18. Pessimistic - someone who isn't very hopeful and tends to believe that the worst
will happen
19. Manuscript - a piece of writing that is written by hand
20. Hearth – in part in front of fireplace. Often made of stone, for fire safety
21. White flakes of snow swirled in, to faint away into water as they met the
heat of the parlour - when the snow came in, it quickly melted into water as it met
the heat
22. Incomers - a person who entered into the White Horse Tavern in this story.
