Heat integration and Pinch methodology

Heat integration for process design

NOTE: This assignment should be finished for the next friday 20th november and it will be made by

groups. Suggestion: Develop by hand all points of this assignment thus, it serves as material

of study.

1. According to the information supplied by figure 1, a heat integration should be carried out using

the Pinch methodology. Steam (at 420C) and cooling water (from 15C to 35C) should be used for

supplying the energy requirements. Select the appropriate hot and cold streams (including, inlet

and outlet temperatures, enthalpies and CP 0 s), apply the Pinch methodology and using 4Tmin =

20C, determine using HINT:

Figure 1: Process flow diagram for heat integration using Pinch methodology.

• Obtain composite curves, grand composite curve and cascade diagram.

• Design the heat exchanger network.

2. Figure 2 shows a process flow diagram for obtaining an organic acid. The Heat Exchanger

Network (HEN) needs to be designed applying the Pinch methodology using 4Tmin = 10K as well

as steam (at 400C) and cooling water (from 30C to 50C) (Use K as unit of temperature). For this

design you should calculate using HINT:

• Obtain composite curves, grand composite curve and cascade diagram.

• Design the heat exchanger network.

3. (This point will be not evaluated, it is only a suggestion) For the exercise proposed in the

document available in AVATA ”Integracion eneregetica con HINT” try to develop the same problem

using the template created by you in excel and used in the points (a) and (b).

BONUS:

This issue is not mandatory, only who develops completely the solicitated items could have an ad-

ditional score in the final note of third examn. The maximum score is 0.5 which will be sumed in

the socre of third examn.

Using excel you should develop a Macro (interactive spreadsheet) that allows to calculate the fol-

lowing items for points 1 and 2:

• Tabulate all streams and the corresponding information (0.1).

• Obtain composite curves (Procedure should be clear and explained by tables, figures and

equations) (0.1).

• Determine table algorithm and cascade diagram as well as the grand composite curve (0.1).

• Obtain the heat exchanger network (0.2).

Mandatory: The document should contain the results (including figures, values, etc.) and analysis

(comparison, error percentage and much more if apply) from a Chemical Engineering point of view.
