Cushion with star

Measurements: 50 x 50cm

26 x 52cm of unbleached medium-weight linen fabric • Fine white linen

fabric: 52 x 52cm for the cushion back; two times 15 x 52cm for the front
vertical strips; 18 x 18cm for the star; four times 4.5 x 50cm for the ties •
52cm of white cotton lace trim, 3.5cm wide • One cushion pad, 50 x 50cm

COVER
The star pattern is provided on page 94. Cut out one star from
the small square of white linen. Attach the star to the centre of
the unbleached linen by hand using blanket stitch (see page
15) or by machine using a small zigzag stitch. Cut the lace trim
into two equal lengths. Attach them to the unbleached linen,
by machine or by hand, above and below the star and 6cm from
the edges.
Sew the two strips of white linen to the unbleached linen, right
sides together, sewing 1cm from the edges, to make the
patchwork on the front of the cushion.
Oversew the outside edges of the patchwork you have created,
as well as those on the large square of white linen. Lay them on
top of one another, right sides together. Sew three of the sides
1cm from the edges (leave the right side (facing you) of the
finished cushion open). Cut the corners at an angle. Turn the
cover right side out and press.

TIES
Press a turning of 1cm along the long edges of each of the
strips for the ties. Fold the strips in half along the length,
wrong sides together. Sew them along the length, folding one of
the ends inside to give a neat finish.
Iron a 1cm hem along the open edge of the cushion cover. Pin
the unfolded ends of the ties under the hem, placing them at
equal distances from the seams and spacing them 15cm apart;
make sure they are opposite each other at the front and the
back. Sew the hem.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Press the cushion cover and insert the cushion pad.
