synopsis
The curtain rises to reveal the annual Christmas Eve Party at the home of
Herr and Frau Stahlbaum. The magical and eccentric Herr Drosselmeyer
has planned a special surprise for his beloved niece, Clara. He presents her
with a wonderfully mysterious wooden Nutcracker.

Clara is immediately taken with the gift, but her brother, Fritz, is jealous and
steals the Nutcracker. In the chaos of his teasing, Fritz accidentally breaks
the Nutcracker. Herr Drosselmeyer comes to the rescue and assures Clara
all will be well.

The party ends and Clara, just before the stroke of midnight, returns to
the darkened living room to check on her Nutcracker. She is frightened by
large mice, but suddenly, Herr Drosselmeyer appears and the mice flee.
Much to Clara’s amazement, Herr Drosselmeyer commands the Christmas
tree to grow to such an enormous size that it pushes away the entire room.
Next, her Nutcracker springs to life. The Nutcracker introduces himself and
his soldiers to Clara.

The mice suddenly reappear, and a vicious battle ensues. The soldiers
seem to be winning, but the great Rat King appears and the tide turns.
The Nutcracker and the Rat King fight, and just as the Rat King is about to
overpower the Nutcracker, Clara distracts him, giving the Nutcracker the
chance to overcome the Rat King.

To Clara’s delight and surprise, the Nutcracker is transformed into a

handsome young prince, who joins her on an enchanted journey to the
Land of the Snow, and then to the beautiful Kingdom of Sweets, where she
is entertained by dances from many lands.

Herr Drosselmeyer carries a sleeping Clara back to her home, where she
awakens, uncertain if her magical journey was a dream or reality.
NPD Staff and Faculty
Katherine Hardy (Education Coordinator) began her dance
training under the direction of former Radio City Ballet performer,
Beverly Mozzetti. She attended the University of Wyoming where she
received her BFA in Dance Performance with a Minor in Business. During
college, she performed in numerous pieces including D-Man in the
Waters set by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, Ride the Culture
Loop and The Nutcracker. Ms. Hardy is in her 7th year at Northern Plains
Dance where she has developed a teaching artist residency program and
lead several adaptive classes for the Bismarck-Mandan community. Recently, Ms. Hardy
participated in the Kennedy Center Arts Integration conference in Washington, DC, and
received a 200-hour yoga certification through Yoga Center in Minneapolis, MN.

Mackenzie Schmaltz (Marketing Manager) has been at Northern

Plains Dance since January of 2010. A graduate of UND with a BA in
Political Science, Ms. Schmaltz took a job at the ND Department of
Agriculture and found her passion for marketing. Although not a dancer
herself, Ms. Schmaltz is a lifelong lover of the arts, having been a member
of UND’s Concert Choir for 4 years and the Grand Forks Master Chorale
for 2 years, along with various other choral and instrumental groups in the
cities of Bismarck, Grand Forks and Bottineau. At Northern Plains Dance,
Ms. Schmaltz enjoys promoting dance and the arts in Bismarck.

Laura Devlin (Studio Administrator) graduated from the University of

Kansas with a degree in theatre performance. Originally from Lawrence,
KS, Laura moved to Bismarck in 2015 and has quickly found a home in the
arts community, acting, directing, and stage managing at Dakota Stage,
performing with Capitol Shakespeare, providing dialect coaching for
productions at Bismarck State College. Laura recently received her graduate
certificate in arts administration from the University of Connecticut, and
is thrilled to be a part of the staff at Northern Plains Dance and put her
knowledge to use and share her passion for the arts with the Bismarck/Mandan community.

Zachary Leighton (Instructor) began dancing at the age of nine

at Dancin’ in Acton in Acton, CA. Three years after joining DIA, Zachary
danced in his first full-length ballet: The Nutcracker, with the Antelope
Valley Ballet in Lancaster, CA. He attended the Houston Ballet Academy
and danced with the Oklahoma Festival Ballet while attending the
University of Oklahoma, before joining Dayton Ballet in 2013. After three
seasons, Zachary returned to southern California to further his teaching
and dancing experience, dancing with the Pacific Ballet Dance Theater
and City Ballet of Los Angeles, as well as teaching at various dance schools in the LA area
including Dancin’ in Acton, bringing his career full circle. Most recently, Zachary was the
Assistant Artistic Director of the Ketchikan Theater Ballet School in Ketchikan, Alaska.

grace louise ojeda (Instructor) has been an educator for over a

decade. She trained extensively at Broadway Dance Center as part of their
summer professional semester and stayed another two years continuing
training under Ginger Cox, and Robert Taylor Jr., and Anne Firmender. She
was a member of Techmoja Dance and Theater Company under the artistic
direction of Kevin Lee-y Green. Grace has been seen at Dixon Place, the
Wilson Center for Performing Arts, and many other venues across the U.S.
With a love for choreography and self-expression, Grace uses her strengths
to give her students a greater sense of who they are as performers.
