Central District Board of Health Trustees:
We understand the challenges COVID-19 has brought to our community, and we appreciate the courage you have
displayed to keep our communities safe. We understand that the Board of Health will consider a district-wide order that
will prohibit organized youth sports and activities. We respectfully ask that you not cancel youth activities in schools.
Our safety protocols are working. Our school district has worked increcibly hard to implement safety protocols in
consultation with the telented personnel of CDH as well as St. Luke’s Sports Medicine team members. Our protocols
have allowed us to educate children in-person as well as provide extracurricular activities, Our district plan indicates that
we would shut down a schoo|, classroom or activity that is contributing to community spread.
‘Our data shows that in-person learning and student activities are not the cause of spread. While we have had to
quarantine both staff and students because of exposure to people who have tested positive for COVID-19, our data
shows that we have not participated in spreading the virus at school or in activities. Almost all of the students and staff
who have had to quarantine did so because of an exposure outside of school in gatherings with family and friends. It
should also be noted many of our extracurricular activities are also a part of our school day curriculum ~ physical
education, choir, and band where many students safely participate every day following safety protoco’s,
Canceling school-sponsored activities puts the community more at risk of spreading the virus. Children who are not
Involved in supervised activities~school or extracurricular gather with others. These gatherings do not include an
adherence to the safety protocols that we require of students. If school sponsored activities are cancelled, students who
have parents who can afford to will immediately connect them to club sports in other counties. From our experience,
these organizations do not follow the recommended safety protocols.
Children need to be involved in healthy activities. Student social and emotional healt is at risk because of the
challenges brought by COVID-19 as well as the challenges that many face during the holiday. Activities keep our children
engaged and supervised as well as give them something to look forward to, work hard for and an incentive to practice
safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In a recent meeting with Dr. Kaleb Redden from St. Luke's Sports
Medicine, he reinforced that being involved in activities was critically important to the social, emotional, academicand
physical development of children. He agreed that as long as we are faithfully following our protoco's, we should continue
to keep students participating.
‘To be honest, it is very difficult for us to explain to our children and our parents why bars can be open but healthy,
engaging activities such as athletics and music are off-limits. We also realize that we are weeks away from a vaccine
being available to help stop the spread.
We know you are faced with difficult decisions; we are faced with similar challenges. We request that you not prohibit
children from safely participating in school-sponsored sports and activities.
Sincerely,
é JO2 Arak )
