At the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to:

a.Know the benefits of GMOs
b.Identify the risks of GMOs
c.List down and explain the benefits and risks of GMOs and
use that information to form a personal opinion.
d.Show awareness on the given risks of GMOs to human
health.

Introduction:
GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) are living organisms
whose genetic material has been synthetically manipulated in a
laboratory through genetic engineering or GE. This relatively new
science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal,
bacterial, viral genes that do not occur in nature or through
traditional cross breeding methods.
The Philippines was the first in Asia to approve commercial
cultivation of a GM crop for animal feed and food in 2002 when
it allowed GM corn planting. It has also allowed GM crop imports
for more than a decade. Around 70 percent of its corn output is
GM.
GMO’s critics argue the technology poses risks to public
health, while advocates say such fears have not been
scientifically proven and that high-yielding genetically
altered crops would help ensure food security as the
world’s population grows.

GMO - genetically modified organism, is a plant, animal, Microorganism

or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified in a
laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. This
creates combinations of plant, animal, bacterial
and virus genes that

Review: do not occur in nature or through traditional

crossbreeding methods.

Genetic Modification -is the process of modifying an organism by adding

new genetic material or DNA. It’s also called genetic engineering
or genetic manipulation. The goal of genetic modification is introducing
new traits that are not currently present in that organism, including
insect resistance hardiness or modified nutrient content.

BioTechnology - is a term used to describe the modification of biological

processes through human intervention

Organic-is a term used to describe plant and animal products that

were produced without synthetic products like pesticides and
antibiotics. Organic products do not contain genetically modified
ingredients.

Activity Card #2
1.GM Os are
created
by

injecting chemicals into food AFTER it is

harvested.

2.After a GMO is developed, it is thoroughly evaluated by the

USDA, FDA, and EPA to identify unintended consequences
to the environment or to our health if consumed.

3.GMOs have bombarded the produce section of the grocery

store. It is difficult to avoid GMO fruits and vegetables.

4.The bulk of GM crops that are harvested in the US are for the
use of livestock feed.

5.If I purchase food labeled with the USDA Organic seal, I know
these products did not grow from a GM seed.

Discussion:
It takes many years for a GM crop to be developed, tested, and
finally approved for commercial release. There are 10 approved variety
of GMO plants. Of those crops, 5 could be found in the produce section.
They are sweet corn, papaya, potatoes, squash and artic apple.Prior to
their release, GMO foods are monitored and regulated by three primary
agencies in the United States:

Food and Drug Administration: "FDA regulates the safety of food for
humans and animals, including foods produced from genetically
engineered (GE) plants. Foods from GE plants must meet the same food
safety requirements as foods derived from traditionally bred plants."

United States Department of Agriculture: "The USDA, EPA, and FDA work
to ensure that crops produced through genetic engineering for
commercial use are properly tested and studied to make sure they pose
no significant risk to consumers or the environment."

Environmental Protection Agency: The EPA focuses on reviewing the

environmental impacts of a GE crop prior to field-testing and the
commercial release of the seed. They ensure there are no unintended
consequences to honeybees, other beneficial insects, earthworms, fish,
or the environment in general. They also look for any possible impact
on other crops.

After careful consideration by these three agencies, a GM crop

may be approved. After approval, seeds are made available for
purchase and farmers can choose to grow the GM crop or not. It's
important to understand that not all farmers choose to grow GM crop
varieties even when they are available.

Although there are benefits to utilizing biotechnology, it’s important

to recognize the risks as well.

Benefits:
Increased revenue for farmers internationally
Some GMO foods taste better
Possibility of growing more food in small area
A stronger tolerance to certain weather conditions
More production of crops

Risks:
Possibility of causing allergic reaction
Possibility of new diseases being introduced into the
Community
Foods produced are not labeled to inform the consumers
of genetically modified foods
Possible destruction of the natural ecosystem
Food companies conduct their own tests not the FDA

Reflection Card
Genetically
modified, or
transgenic,
organisms are
created through high tech transfers of selected genetic material from one
organism to another. The goal of this genetic engineering process is to create
new varieties of plants and animals with chosen characteristics. While humans
have intervened in the genetic development of plants and animals over the
millennia, these new bio-engineered interventions are
of a different order.
Historically, farmers have altered the genetic make-up
of plant and animal species by selecting individuals that
possess desirable traits for reproduction, cross-breeding, and cross-pollination.
These interventions have taken place within
the limits imposed by nature.
The promoters of GMOs point to the benefits to human
good these products will bring. A stance that holds that all of Earth’s
expressions have intrinsic value leads to deep ethical/moral questions about
genetic modification of life forms even for the purpose of human good.
