Revisionist History
Hello. My name is XXX and for recorded speech I chose to cover the 9 th
episode from the 2nd season of the Revisionist History which name is “McDonald’s
Broke My Heart”.
In a nutshell, this episode is about the investigations that Malcolm Gladwell
has made to show us the reality about McDonald’s french fries.
McDonald’s used to make the best fast food french fries in the world —
until they changed their recipe in 1990 and because of the first try of french fries at
13 years old that made Malcolm Gladwell to love McDonald’s french fries he
decided to travel to the top food R&D lab in the country to discover what was lost,
and why for the past generation we’ve been eating french fries that taste like
cardboard. He discovers that the main character in this change was Phil Sokolof
who because of fast food and other unhealthy dishes had high blood cholesterol
and was at risk of dying. Phil Sokolof started to make a lot of informative ads and
talk to managers of fast food restaurants in order to convince them to change
something in their food preparation to be healthy, because his bad experience was
like a push up to make something for all people to protect their health. He died at
43 years old because he had a heart attack, but his fight for healthy fast food was
successful. Fast food restaurants have stopped frying french fries into beef tallow
and that’s why their taste is different from 1990, but even though the taste is not as
good as it was in the past, a lot of people nowadays continue to eat them.
From this episode I found out a lot of new things such as people, the real risk
we are exposed to if we eat too much fast food and how when we really want to
change or to obtain something if we don’t give up, after a great effort, success will
come undoubtedly.
More than that, I can say that the most surprisingly for me was the power of
a single person to convince the fast food restaurants’ managers to change
something for people’s wellness.
To sum up, I would like to point out that this podcast has made me think
differently, because I didn’t thought seriously about fast food consequences on
health before and in the past I chose to eat fast food sometimes, but now I will
think twice before. I understood that we can live easily and without fast food in our
lives and if we know that we have the power of changing something we should just
do it, especially if this change can improve awareness of something bad for us.
