Question: Why is Total Bromine monitored but nor Free Bromine?

The reason for measuring Total Bromine is that the disinfection effect is achieved with combined
(bromamines) and free bromine (hypobromous acid + hypobromite). Hypobromite is relatively
ineffective so not important.

In the case of Chlorine, combined chlorine (chloramines) is less effective whilst free chlorine
(hypochlorous acid + hypochlorite) is. Therefore mainly free chlorine is measured for monitoring
the disinfection effect.

The DPD kit can be used for Bromine and Chlorine and the procedure is the same. If only Bromine is
present you do not need the glycine and only need to convert the chlorine value to bromine (multiply
chlorine by 2.25). If chlorine and bromine is present see below:

It is possible to "bind" chlorine with glycine which results in only

bromine reacting with the DPD reagent.

Add 200µl van 10% Glycine-solution (10g in 100 ml of demin water) per 10
ml sample. Follow the DPD-F
test as described in de procedure.

To summarise:

WITH glycine: total bromine

WITHOUT glycine: Free chlorine + total bromine

Note to convert your reading from Cl2 to Br2 if you want to express it in
this way.

Glycine can be ordered via NASE (Boom 999-371-000: GLYCINE PRO-ANALYSIS QUANTITY
100 GR).
Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Jan,

Can you provide the details.

Juha, The Bromine test is essentially the same as the Total Chlorine. Variations can give some limited
differentiation. If you measure TOTAL HALOGEN in terms of either Chlorine or Bromine, then you have a
good guide to the oxidising biocide levls present.

Subject: Test kit for metering free bromine

Jim,

I'm running a MB control trial here in Oulu Finland and we are treating the incoming water with
Actibrom and hypochlorite. At the moment we are only measuring the free chlorine using the Hach
test kit involving a comparator disk
and DPD sachets. I need to test for free bromine also. Do we have discs for measuring free bromine
and the necessary test sachets. I realise that these would be supplied by NASE but I would like to
have more knowledge of what to ask for before I contact them directly.

Best regards,
Juha Rintala
