A-4 Target Mean Strength for Mix Proportioning

fck’ = fck + 1.65 s
Where
fck’ = Target average compressive strength at 28 days
Fck = Characteristic Compressive strength at 28 days
S = Standard Deviation
From Table 1, Standard deviation s = 4 for M25 Grade concrete
Therefore, Target Strength = 20 + 1.65 x 4
= 26.60 N/mm²

A-5 Selection of Water Cement (W/C) Ratio

From Table 2, Maximum W/C Ratio = 0.55
Based on experience, adopt W/C ratio as 0.45
0.45 < 0.55 Hence OK.

A-6 Selection of Water Content

As Table-2 Maximum Water For 20mm Aggregate = 186 Lt (for 50 to 100 mm slump)
Estimated Water Content for 75 mm slump = 170 + 6 /100 x 186
= 181 Lt
A-7 Calculation of Cement Content
W/C Ratio = 0.45
Cement Content = 181 / 0.45 = 402.22 kg /m³

From Table 5 of IS 456, Minimum cement content for sivere exposure condition is
300 kg / m³
402 kg /m³ > 300 kg/ m³ hence ok.

A-8 Proportioning for Volume of Coarse & Fine Aggregate Content

From Table – Volume of coarse aggregate corresponding 20mm size aggregate &
fine aggregate (zone – I) for water cement ratio = 0.50
In the present case water cement ratio is = 0.45
Therefore, volume Of Coarse aggregate is required to be increased to decrease fine
Aggregate content.
As the water cement ratio is lower by 0.10, the proportion of volume of coarse
Aggregate is increased by 0.02 %. (At the rate +0.01 for every + 0.05 change in
Water cement ratio).
Therefore, corrected proportion of volume of coarse aggregate for the water
Cement ratio 0.45 = 0.62

Volume of coarse aggregate = 0.62 m³

Volume of fine aggregate = 1 – 0.62 = 0.38

A–9 Mix Calculations Trial Number - I

The Mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows
A) Volume Of Concrete: 1 m³.
B) Volume Of Cement = Mass Of Cement X 1 / 1000
Sp. Gravity of Cement
= 402 X 1 / 1000
3.15
= 0.128 m³
C) Volume Of Water = Mass Of Water X 1 / 1000
Sp. Gravity of Water
= 197 x 1/1000
1
= 0.197 m³

D) Volume Of all In aggregates = [a-(b+c)]

= [1-(0.128+0.197)]

= 0.675 m³

E) Mass Of Coarse Aggregate =D x Vol of coarse aggregate X Specific gravity of coarse aggregate
x 1000
= 0.675 x 0.62 x 2.75 x 1000
= 1150.87 Kg
F) Mass Of Fine Aggregate = D x Volume Of fine Aggregate X specific gravity of fine aggregate
x 1000
= 0.675 X 0.38 X 2.68 X 1000 = 687.42 kg
