Narrative Text: Folklore

Aspects Narrative Text
Definition A narrative text is an imaginative story to entertain people. A
narrative (or story) is any report of connected events,
presented in a sequence of written or spoken words, and/or in
a sequence of (moving) pictures.
Social Function to amuse, entertain and to deal with an actual or vicarious
experience in different ways. It also deals with problematic
events which lead to a crisis or turning point of some kind,
which in turn finds a resolution
Generic Structure  Orientation : It is about the opening paragraph where the
characters of the story are introduced.
 Complication : Where the problems in the story developed.
 Resolution : Where the problems in the story is solved.
 Coda / reorientation (optional) : lesson from the story
Language Features –Past tense (killed, drunk, etc)
– Adverb of time (Once upun a time, one day, etc)
– Time conjunction (when, then, suddenly, etc)
– Specific character. The character of the story is specific, not
general. (Cinderella, Snow White, Alibaba, etc)
– Action verbs. A verb that shows an action. (killed, dug,
walked, etc)
– Direct speech. It is to make the story lively. (Snow White
said,”My name is Snow White). The direct speech uses
present tense.

The Golden Snail


Once Upon a time. There lived a king named Kertamarta. King Kertamarta was the
king of Daha Kingdom. The king had 2 daughters, they were Galuh Ajeng and Candra
Kirana who were pretty and kind. Candra Kirana had been betrothed with Raden Inu
Kertapati, Prince of Kahuripan who was handsome and wise.But Galuh Ajeng, the sister
of Candra Kirana was very jealous of her. It was because Galuh Ajeng was interested in
Raden Inu. Galuh Ajeng then met the witch to put a spell on Candra Kirana. She also
defamed her so as Candra Kirana was exiled from the palace. When Candra Kirana went
along the coast, the witch also emerged and spelled her to become a golden snail. But the
spell would be broken if the golden snail met her fiance, Raden inu.
One day an old woman, who was looking for the fish with her net, caught the golden
snail. The golden snail was brought to her home and placed in the jug.The next day the
old woman as usual went to the sea to catch fish but she caught nothing. She went home
disappointedly. But when she arrived at her hut, she was startled because she saw various
delicious foods on the table. The old woman wondered who sent those foods. So the
following days the old woman underwent the similar incident. The next morning the old
woman pretended to go to the sea but then she carried out surveillance of what happened.
She saw the golden snail turned into a pretty girl and then started to cook. The old
woman then asked her, “Who on earth are you, beautiful girl?”“I am the princess of
Daha Kingdom who was spelled and turned into a golden snail by my sister’s witch
because she is jealous of me,” said the golden snail before she turned again into the
golden snail. The old woman amazed by what she just saw.
The prince Inu Kertapati looked for Candra Kirana after realizing that the
princess was disappeared. He searched for her by disguising as a commoner. The witch
who followed him, turned herself into the crow to bring misfortune on Raden Inu
Kertapati. Raden Inu Kertapati was very surprised seeing the speaking crow. He
considered that the crow was magical and then he followed what the crow said. In fact
the crow gave Raden Inu Kertapati the wrong direction. In his journey Raden Inu
Kertapati met an old man who was hungry, and gave him food. The old man evidently
was the person who had supernatural power and he helped Raden Inu Kertapati from the
crow. The old man struck the crow with his wand, and the crow turned to smoke. The old
man told Raden Inu Kertapati where Candra Kirana was. He told Raden Inu Kertapati to
go to Dadapan village. After going for days he arrived to Dadapan village. He
approached a hut to ask for water since he was very thirsty. But he was very startled,
after through the window he saw his fiance, Candra Kirana, was cooking. Suddenly the
spell was broken because of the meeting.
Candra Kirana introduced Raden Inu to the old woman with whom she stayed
with for all this time. After thanked to the old woman Raden Inu Kertapati brought his
fiance to the palace. The King Kertamarta, who finally knew what Galuh Ajeng did to
Candra Kirana, apologized to Candra Kirana and so Candra Kirana did. Frightened of
being punished, Galuh Ajeng ran away to the forest but she slipped and fell into the
chasm.After Raden Inu Kertapati married Candra Kirana, he asked the kind old woman
to stay in the palace and they all lived happily ever after.

resolution can met her fiance, the spell was broken because of the meeting. galuh
ajeng got punishment from his father, Galuh Ajeng ran away to the forest
but she slipped and fell into the chasm. After Raden Inu Kertapati married
Candra Kirana, he asked the kind old woman to stay in the palace and
they all lived happily ever after.
Coda Even if you cover up the crime well, one day it will be revealed. Always
do good and stay away from envy and you will survive in life.

General Structure a. Intro
The introduction establishes melodic, harmonic, and/or
rhythmic related to the main body of song.
b. Verse
It is the section of the song structure that tells the story. This
is the exposition, describing the scene or the person, or an
emotion.
c. Chorus of Refrain
A chorus is the most repeated section, so it’s the easiest
remembered. A chorus is the summary of the song’s story.
All the verses have been leading up to the chorus, and is
usually the part of the song people sing along with.
d. Break
A break is actually a brief “rest” or “pause” for the
core melody within a song used to add further dimension
and excitement.
e. Bridge
This is the part of the song that shifts. It can suddenly
change tempo, volume, or instrumentation.
f. Outro or Coda
This is the end of the road for the song. It can repeat the intro,
chorus or a refrain as an outro, or a bridge with an
instrumental solo.

Language Features 1. Lyrics are written in first, second, or third person given on
the specific perspective you choose. Often time point of views
change in lyrics, but only when needed.
2. It use rhyming words. Usually songs use a familiar
catchy tune and rhyme. A rhyme is a linguistic style,
based on consonance or similar sound of two or more
syllables or whole words at the end of one line.
3. It use alliteration. It is a stylistic device in which a number
of words, having the same first consonant sound, occur close
together in a series, for example:A big bully beats a baby boy.
4. Some songs use poetic devices, such as figure of speech
and imagery. While songs can paint a vivid picture since they
are longer mediums, imagery can be found in just a single
sentences as well. Imagery is vivid descriptive language that
appeals to one or more of the senses (sight, hearing, touch,
smell, and taste) for example : Her blue eyes were as bright as
the sun, blue as the sky, but soft as silk.
5. Some songs use amusing word play and slang
language. A word play is the manipulation of language
(in particular, the sounds, and meanings of words) with
the intent to amuse; verbal wit.Slang is more common in
speech than in writing, for example: gonna, wanna, ain’t,
etc.
6. In song there are usually found lyrics that use a quote of
conversation and also someone's expression and it is used as
a song lyrics.
7. Personification, inanimate objects are considered like
humans, example: "your eyes talks to me"
