My Personal Values and Ethics?

I don’t think I am the right person to talk

about personal values and ethics. How do I know
about my personal values and ethics? If I only
depend on other’s opinion. What if I born into a
different body? I would have a different belief and
morals. That’s why if you ask me about my personal
values and ethics, I might just give you what my
thoughts are right now and probably I would give
you an answer that could change tomorrow.
Probably I would give you an answer about
good and evil being inseparable. Probably I would
mention about Bible. Probably I would tell you how
I wrote this FLA, how I wasted my time to think
what is really right and wrong. Probably I would
question God. The only way I could answer it is
through living from each life in order to understand
the concept it.
However, for now all I can say is nothing.
That’s why it is everything.

Reconciling Drug Use with Ethics and Religion

As a student, I have seen a lot of people who consistently have a solid belief for their own
religion and ethics. Recreational drug use brings up philosophical issues about how individuals
should treat others, yet about how they should treat themselves. The three modern Western
schools of ethical thought (utilitarianism, deontology and virtue ethics) express various
perspectives on what is admissible or to be considered.
Utilitarianism, looks at the outcomes of activities and decisions of drug use, as long as
referred to is not addictive or harming you. If the drug use is relatively could not conceive harm and
just create a pleasurable feeling, then there would be nothing wrong with it. Specifically, utilitarian
would feel that the recreational utilization of cannabis is definitely not a major ordeal. Albeit, this
viewpoint on drug use has not stretched out to harder drugs like heroin, as they have the chance
through dependence or addiction that could lead to harm even in the short term of using it.
However, other ethical philosophies put a greater emphasis on preserving the human capacity to
reason. So as long as there are reasons to be provided, utilitarianism would also consider it.
Deontology prioritizes the moral rules and the intentions of actions: If a certain action
incapacitates the ability to reason, deontology would reject it. It simply means if there is a lack of
support then deontology would find it wrong. I have seen people getting high and their perspective
or how they see their world is far different from reality. Just like nicotine, heroine, morphine and
suddenly, you’re addicted to them. That is why it is illegal to get high when driving or even in just
normal occasions because it could really bring us harm. According to Kant’s logic, if rationality is
central to our conception of what it means to be a human being, then even a less intense high
would still be morally harmful. It simply means, just one hit of it, you’ll know you will never be the
same.
Virtue ethicists, who pursue the lessons of Aristotle with respect to control and carrying on
with a moral life, fall some place in these two perspectives. In excellence morals, I figure it would
rely upon the degree to which the drug use as long as you still act as an effective human being.
Philosophical contemplations frequently meet with profoundly religious views on recreational drug
use. Perspectives differs over religions. As legalizing the use of drugs spreads, our religion and
morals will keep on processing and I think it would not settle not until we get extinct. Sounds
negative but that is my opinion. As far as I have heard, as long as we live, chaos is constant. So,
believe what you want to believe. Your life all lies in your hand.

For the Better

These morality and utilitarianism dilemma is not new to me. I have this belief where I do not conform to the
norms for my taste does not fit to their taste. Most of the time I do things morally but when an unknown part of me
whispers in my ear, I usually follow it. Such as how I copy pasted my assignment from a source without much
paraphrasing, I think that was the most stupid thing I ever did besides running away from my friends while crying for I
was embarrassed to share my shitty thoughts. That was related to utilitarianism because I chose what was easy in
facing academic and emotional crisis and to avoid them being stressed from my own existence albeit, that could also
be like an egoism scenario rather than utilitarianism for it does not contribute anything to the others but me. Yes,
when we say utilitarianism it must be beneficial to the many not only by yourself or myself. And today you will know
whom I choose to save from a sinking ship in my own utilitarianism stand.
I think my choices might not be morally correct. As much as I want to, I want to kill them all except that that
was a joke. Of course I want to save them all. How can I be that good student when in this assignment I could not
even imaginably save them all? Okay so here it is. A scenario of a sinking ship with the following passengers of a
brilliant scientist, an ex-convict, a pregnant mother, a confessed drug addict, a charitable multi-millionaire, an 80-
year-old bachelor, a 5-year-old mentally retarded boy, a 55-year-old paralytic, a graduating nursing student and a
newly ordain priest are about to die and I only have the power to save only 7 people. God is good, right? So he has
the power and kindness to welcome these following people: an 80-year-old bachelor, a 55-year-old paralytic and a
newly ordain priest. You must be shocked and I know you already have an intention to disagree but this is my own
interpretation by means of utility. We need a person to be able to share his or her experience to the people who are
trying to change from their drug addiction. We confessed his wrong-doing and I know some people who were used to
be like that and really changed for the better. He could also be reason why a drug addict person would change for he
or she was inspired by the person I saved. An ex-convict was a criminal who might have undergo rehabilitation and
lots of reading while in still in jail. You could easily make fun of my essay but I believe that this kind of people still
need to start a new beginning, a chance to be a better role for society and to God. The 5-year-old mentally retarded
boy is still useful, for he could be a patient and a student for those psychiatrist and teachers who need paychecks. He
could be the reason of why the marriage of his parents get stronger because for their love of their own son, they
would not like to leave him having separate family. The pregnant lady is still useful. What if his son or daughter could
do something groundbreaking and it would not happen if it wasn’t raise by her mom. I know this is unlikely but I have
to admit it, I know how it feels to be without their mother. What if that pregnant has sons and daughters that needs
her motherly love? It could still greatly affect many people. A graduating nursing student, a charitable multi-millionaire
and a brilliant scientist could surely help many people, no question. However they’re human and they might commit
mistakes but it is not my problem anymore, I only have a job to save them and not to tell them what to do. While for
newly-ordained priest, he’s close to God and I know he surely believes that that is his time.
But who am I to judge whether these people I choose could really be useful in society. These people could
not be the person in the future we think it to be today. However, I already have explained how they can contribute to
the society. I might be wrong especially I chose the most dangerous people. And disclaimer, I am not God. I am just
a human who happens to have maybe a different view in life. I might still change and probably would look back at this
essay and would be proud or embarrassed. Any grade will do, I am just being myself. And I realized in this subject, I
really have to be myself. No one likes a copycat because it doesn’t show their true self.

Critical Reflection: Technology Ethical Issues

Don’t Mess With Tech

What am I doing right now? I’m simply writing my essay using my laptop. Can I write it without laptop? Yes, I
can write it using my pen. However, the pen I’m about to use come from an invention using certain technologies as
well as the paper and laptop. Technology is really widespread. Most of the things I’m using right now are produced by
technology. However, I’m gonna ask you if can you survive without technology today. Can you? I think we can.
Technology is just a tool to ease our work. However, it really has changed the world upside-down. How can I say
that? People used to hunt and gather raw foods in nature and today we might not even survive if we go outside alone
in a wild forest without equipment and processed foods for months. Scientifically speaking, our human survival
characteristics has changed as well as our surroundings throughout thousands of millennium. The world has never
been like before without technology.
I keep on stating technology, but what is technology? It is simply the application of scientific knowledge for
practical purposes, especially in industry. Technology is not merely just about devices and stuff it could be classified
into 7 according to internet, which is Agriculture and Bio-Technology which develops and uses devices and systems
to plant, grow, and harvest crops; Energy and Power Technology which develops and uses devices and systems to
convert, transmit, or process energy; Construction Technology which develops and uses devices and systems to put
structures on the sites where they will be used; Manufacturing Technology which develops and uses devices and
systems and processes to convert materials into products in a factory; Transportation Technology which develops
and uses devices and systems to move people and cargo from an origin point to a destination; Medical Technology
which develops and uses devices and systems to promote health and cure illnesses ; Information and
Communication Technology which develops and uses devices and systems to gather, process, share information,
and to share ideas.
Now that you know what are those classifications of technology let me share you a story. Once upon a time,
technology was used without any human concern. There are times that humans were used as test subjects for
medicines and for weapons. During the World War, most often, subjects were sick or disabled people, whose doctors
told them that they were receiving "medical treatment." They were used as the subjects of harmful and deadly
experiments, without their knowledge or consent. Do you think these things still exist? Do you think it is unethical?
Morally speaking, it is still existing and it is unethical. It is unethical because it can ruin a person’s life. To mediate
these kind of immoral things we should address it.
Here comes technology ethics. It is a field of study aimed at recognizing and addressing moral issues
concerning mechanical and digital technology development and practical application. Human experimentation wasn’t
entirely really unhelpful, it benefits people to be aware on what they should and should not do. However, it is by law
that it must be prohibited or mediated. The experimentation must and strictly be following the safety regulation and
ethics to avoid chaos and more death.
However, we are currently in a state of depression. What kind of depression? Overpopulation, poverty,
injustice, exploitation, incurable diseases, and other craps that are really getting along with technology. Did I say
getting along? Not really. What I mean is that we are living in a crappy world. Full of crappy humans, but thank
goodness we are bound to turn into ashes. It is natural for our planet to shut down gradually. Just like any other
technological tools. If over-used, It dies. Can we prevent it? If you are asking me, then no. In the future, our specie
could die. I mean look at the dinosaurs. However, we can slow it down. Technology can also be a tool for healing the
planet but it could also be the end of it. We must combine technology and ethics in order to have a less complicated
and chaotic world.

Ethical Analysis: Technology and Social Media: An Ethical Focus

Social Media like a Soap Opera

It’s not weird that social media is now more of an entertainment platform than an informational platform. We
are humans that casually need interaction and an escape from reality. In this case, we are currently more into social
media. People today get new friends that they found in the internet, and I am one of them. The interaction today has
two dimensions, online and personal. For most people I know, they are more comfortable talking online because they
could think first what to say and erase them. Unlike personal, it’s difficult to take back the words and actions you have
done to them. However, that could also affect our socialization. The more the person is addicted to social media is
more likely to loss self-esteem during a face-to-face interaction with another person. So, you happened to find
someone like that, I could say that she or he is not the only one. Almost everyone in this generation has become like
that. However, how is this can affect the ethics of a person? The more you think about it, people can hide their true
selves online and they could use fake names to scam someone. It’s like the new drug of the generation. A subtle
drug perhaps.
There is also a case when people get addicted to social media, they tend to shut people out. That’s a
Frozen reference, if you didn’t notice. Speaking of Frozen, Elsa could be used as an example of a social media
addict. However, that could be stopped if someone would help her. Anna could be an example of a family, friend or a
psychologist. I have a brother like Elsa but a tad different. My brother steals my mother’s phone to play Mobile
Legends and chat strangers online with it almost every night. Even my mother doesn’t know what to do because no
matter how many times she disciplines her son, it’s still useless. However, he told me his secret. He’s also hiding his
true sexuality. It shocks me at first because it’s really hard to notice from his actions in our home. He wasn’t playing
Mobile Legends but he was watching movies that is related to his situation. Maybe before, he felt like he couldn’t talk
about it with us because girls are dominant in the house. My mother is also religious. But, as an Ate, I want to reduce
the tension in the house. That was during my mid-term exam when I received a message from my mom in the
messenger that she was crying. She was crying because she felt like she failed as a mom. It made me cry too. I
talked to my college friends, my roommates, and my girlfriend about it. They all gave a good suggestion. To ease his
confusion, I told him about my situation and we became closer ever since. I also told my mom that it’s normal to have
a crazy phase especially during puberty. I have been there. Emotions when I was 16 were overwhelming and I was
too immature to even think of a good action. However, as I get into college, I have become more patient and I
realized that social media is not all bad. Without social media, I couldn’t have talk to my family instantly. That day I
learned how important is social media, but with moderation.
You are probably looking for an answer like social media must be used in an ethical way. Because, how
could people keep in touch for a long time if they treat each other right. I mean sure, people can use social media in a
horrible way and is unacceptable, I can totally agree with that. Social media is like a world full of diverse people which
is quite nice and bad too. We might have probably step their line which is why bashing is prevalent. Moreover, we
can avoid some of the bad things online, if we think before we post. That’s why scandals and private spreads around
so rapidly online because it is a public site. That’s why there are more reasons to be depressed about. Isn’t it
amazing? Of course, not. Hopefully, when I get to be a teacher someday and get to encounter that, I hope I could
help by who knows what wisdom I could blurt out. But, I will bring these experiences I had and will have to teach my
children and students to become a better netizen and a person.
