DIALOGUES NEEDED:
Scene 1: Introduction about the overall status of Philippines in terms of Food
Security
Shot #1
Host: The Philippines, a country with 7,107 islands, is a diverse community, consists of
different beliefs, customs, traditions, and cultures. Our country is rich in natural
resources, as well as innovation of infrastructure and continuing exploration and
enhancement of the industry and government. As we explore each one of them and
analyze its effect on the country, we can create a solution to the current problem we are
facing as of today's society.
Shot #2
Host: Despite this fact, it is undeniably true that some areas in the country are
experiencing malnutrition because of poverty or inability to sustain one's need because
of their income. As the population continues to grow, it is harder to cope up with food
accessibility, food utilization as well as food stability. It resulted in the said problems a
while ago. Meanwhile, resources such as crops, fruits, vegetables, and meat are
beginning to decrease in supply as its demand arises.
Shot #3
Host: Food security assesses by all people at all times to sufficient food for an active
and healthy life. According to the food security risk index, our country Philippines has
orange implications, which means we have a high risk of food insecurity. Food
insecurity is a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain
access to adequate food. It is because of the overall insufficient income of those
minimum wage earners. And also because of in appropriate nutrition security in a
household and the hunger experienced by the people in the area.
Shot #4
Host: So everyone, to further understand this topic, I will discuss the four pillars of food
security. These are the food availability, food accessibility, food utilization, and food
stability. It is for us to comprehend the standing of the Philippines from the past years
up to the present. We are to compare the years as well as the food produced here in
our country. So, let's get started!
Host: According to the 2018 data of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), food
available per capita's computation from 1990 to 2018 is by net food disposal over the
population. The table clearly stated that rice, which one of the most needed
commodities has the lowest availability despite the vast lands of farmers intended for
farming and cultivating rice. Meanwhile, meat products such as chicken, fish, and pork
are in stable condition. Food available per capita refers to the volume of food
commodities available in its unprocessed form for consumption by each member of the
population.
Shot #6
Host: Consumer Price Index is the indicator of the change in the average prices of a
fixed basket of goods and services commonly purchased by households relative to a
base year. Based on the data given by PSA, from 2010 to 2018, the commodities stated
are rice, corn, fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy products, and fish and seafood, which
recorded an increase as the year progressed. There may be some decrease with the
other products, but the fact that it is increasing somehow is a good thing. It means that
one household can accommodate their commodities and necessities needed daily.
Shot #7
Host: In terms of food utilization, PSA recorded the ratio of food expenditure to total
family expenditure, which refers to the share of food in the overall family expenditures.
The data indicate that from 2003 to 2015 data, the Philippines has not much of a
difference from the past years. PSA recorded the ratio ranging from 19.5% to 20.3%. Its
computation for this would be food expenditure divided by total family expenditure,
multiply by 100.
Shot #8
Host: Lastly is the food stability. Based on the UN report, almost 60 million Filipinos
suffered from food insecurity. They experienced a lack of food access as well as food
utility from 2017 to 2019. This data makes the Philippines the highest country
experiencing food insecurity. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) defines severe
food insecurity as those who have gone a day or days without eating. It is also due to a
lack of money and other resources. Meanwhile, moderately food insecure are people
who have "experienced uncertainties about their ability to obtain food and have forced
to compromise on the quantity/quality of the food they consume. With the said data, we
can conclude that our nation doesn't have much food stability.
Shot #9
Host: So basically, food security is when people have full access to the resources they
needed in daily living. The four pillars of food security are food accessibility, food
utilization, food availability, and food stability. It helps to assess one country's ability to
provide the commodity, as well as the prevention of poor nutrition distributed throughout
the community. For food security objectives to be realized, all four dimensions must be
fulfilled simultaneously.
Shot #10
Shot #11
Host: Bear in mind that we should be aware of the status of the country's food
distribution and production before we complain. We must know first how things are
going before we act. It is our responsibility as a Filipino and as a human to observe our
surroundings. And be guided according to what is right. Every little thing we gained and
spend is essential so, don't just waste it and put it in the trash.
Shot #12
Host: So how you guys think we should solve this matter? Are you aware of these
happenings? What are the things you noticed in our country that affect this situation of
ours? In our next episode, we're going to ask the opinion of an economist regarding
food security here in our country. See you next week for another episode of (name of
the segment).
