Swine flu/Hog flu/Pig flu

 It’s a strain of influenza virus that usually

infect pigs.
 These strains are all found in influenza C
virus and the subtype of influenza A virus.
 The transmission from pig to human is not
common, but in the mid 20`s century,
transmission from pig to humans became
possible.
 Recently, its confirmed these strains of
swine flu can pass from human to human.
History:
 1918: Flu pandemic was occurred, when
pigs became sick at the same time
as humans. It was confirmed the
pandemic in humans was
associated with H1N1.
 1976: U.S. Outbreak
The numbers of people death were
reported, and confirmed H1N1 strain
was detected.
 1988: Zoonosis
It was proved, the transmission from
other vertebrae to humans are possi
ble
 2007: Phillippine outbreak
 2009: Outbreak in humans
The first cases were reported in
Mexico & USA
Transmission:
 Transmission to humans:
1. People who work with poultry and
swine/pig, especially with intense
exposures, are at high risk of zoonosis
infection.
2. The risk of infection in meat processing
workers is lower than that of farm workers

 Human to human:
Confirmed can be transmitted
Signs and Symptoms:
The symptoms are similar to those of
influenza like illness in general (not
specific).
Symptoms include: fever, cough, sore
throat, body aches, headache, , chills,
fatigue, sometime diarrhea and
vomiting.
Prevention:
 Has three components:
1. Prevention in swine/hog/pig
The prevention among swine, include: facility
management, herd management, and vaccination.
2. The transmission is believed to occur in pig farms
where farmers are in close contact with live pigs, that`s
why for those who are close contact to those
circumstances are encouraged to use face mask when
dealing with infected animals.
The vaccination on swine is usefull to reduce the swine
to human transmission.
3. The illness spreads between humans through coughing,
sneezing, and touching.
 The illness can not be spread by pork products, since the
virus is not transmitted through food.
 The swine flu is most contagious during the first five up to
ten days of illness.
 Diagnosis can be made by the specimen (blood)
examination.
Treatment:
 No specific treatment
 The usage of Immunomodulator drugs can make the
illness milder and make feel better faster
 Palliative care (at home or hospital)
 Tamiflu (Oseltaminir) or Relenza (Zovaminir) are
recommended for the treatment and/or prevention of
infection with swine flu viruses
 If the symptoms are present and get worse, the
hospital intensive care is recommended
 On the top of that, the illness can be cured by the self
limiting disease as long as the human anti body is well
produced and well worked
