Purpose: 1.0 Introduction

1.1 Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to give guidelines regarding minimum requirements to be


followed for the backfilling of polycrete manhole within the shaft. Necessary records will we
generate to show the compliance with requirements.

1.2 Scope

This document covers the procedure to be adopted for backfilling works around the polycrete manhole
within the shaft at site.

2.0 Procedure

2.1 Safety

2.1.1 A responsible competent Forman shall monitor the related activities till the completion of the work at
site.

2.1.2 Tool Box talks shall be conducted prior to starting any activities at site. Forman / Engineer shall ensure
all personnel involved in the operation are fully aware of their individual duties and the possible
danger related with work.
2.1.3 Safety Signboards stating in English & Arabic shall be placed at all access points to the working area
to prevent unauthorized personnel from the entering the area.

2.1.4 During all operations, priority will be given to the safety of all personnel. The area under backfilling
shall be barricaded for common traffic.

2.1.5 All tools and equipments to be used for the job shall be in good working condition and well
maintained, and where required.

2.1.6 All personnel shall wear appropriate PPE suitable for the work being carried out. All PPE shall be in
good condition.
2.1.7 An approved fire extinguisher(s) shall be kept next to equipments being used in the work site, and
where required by Safety or stipulated in the Work Permit, an approved gas detector shall be kept in
the vicinity of the work site.

2.2 Working Procedure

2.2.1 Stock pile of backfilling material (dune sand) shall be prepared and prior approval taken from ACE.
Backfill material shall be tested in site laboratory to find out the Maximum dry density at Optimum
moisture content.
2.2.2 Backfilling shall be done in uniform layers all around the manhole up to the ground water level. Keep
the minimum time gap between two layers to fully saturate and settle down the sand particles.
2.2.3 Any layer above the water level shall be flooded with water to achieve the required degree of
compaction and will be offer to ACE for their visual inspection.
2.2.4 It will be compulsory to fill the top layer with granular fill material and reinstate the surface to original
ground condition.
2.2.5 In case of manhole coming under carriage way top layers of sub base & road base shall be filled with
approved material and required compaction test will be carried out.

3.1 Construction Manager:


 He shall be responsible for the overall site works.
 Plan the activities on a day-to-day basis with concerned discipline engineers.
 Responsible for the implementation of agreed program to the required Quality and
Safety standards.
 He shall ensure that the relevant permissions / NOCs are available and valid for the
work on hand.
 He shall ensure the compliance to the Method Statement and the Client’s Procedures
and Specifications.
 Ensure relevant reports – documents are generated as per the procedure / QCP.

3.2 Surveyor :
 The Surveyor shall be responsible to mark out the level prior to starting the work.

3.3 Discipline Engineer:


 Responsible for the implementation of the agreed program to the required Quality &
Safety standard.
 Supervise construction activities for the discipline scope.
 Identify the required resources to carry out the activity.
 Effective use of Plant and Materials.
 Provide information for taking day-to-day decision by the Construction Manager and
implement the same.
 Ensure relevant report / documents are generated as per the procedures / QCP.

3.4 QA\QC Engineer :

 Report to QA\QC Manager functionally.


 Overall control, supervision & implementation of contract quality plan & technical
problems resolution of quality problems.
 Implementation & monitoring of Project Quality Plan requirements and assure
compliance.
 Ensure MAS are approved before incorporating into the project.
 Check daily inspection reports for correctness and completeness.
