Introduction
The establishment of The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or known as
ASEAN, was established on 8th August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the
ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN. It consists of
several countries which are Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. After
that, Brunei Darussalam then joined on 7 January 1984, Viet Nam on 28 July 1995, Lao
PDR and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999. These ten Member
States who make up the ASEAN today.
In 2015, ASEAN had launched a community named the ASEAN Community 2015 in
order to achieve the vision where to ensure peace, stability and shared prosperity between
the member states. The launching became a historic milestone and a culmination of
ASEAN’s resilience and dynamism and also shows to the entire world how well the
cooperation between the ASEAN Member States has become one community. Next, the
ASEAN Community 2015 indicates that the member states agreed to acknowledge that an
integrated, stable, cooperative and caring community is important in helping ASEAN nations
to improve their performance.
The ASEAN Community 2015 consists of three main pillars that symbolize the
community of opportunities which are the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC), the
ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC).
These three areas are the most crucial areas that need attention, necessary improvements
and plans. ASEAN had formulated the Blueprints of these three pillars that consists of detail
and specific strategic objectives and actions in order to achieve better development.
However, not all human rights can be addressed clearly through these three pillars of the
ASEAN Community. Thus, ASEAN tried to include as many as they can in order to help
humans as can be seen mostly in the ASEAN Political-Security Community and the ASEAN
Socio-cultural Community.
Briefly, ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) aims to ensure the people in
ASEAN countries live in peace with one another in a harmonious environment. For the
ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), it focuses more on transforming ASEAN into a stable
and highly competitive region with equitable economic development, reduced poverty and
socio-economic gaps. While for the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC), ASCC aims
in contributing to realise an ASEAN Community that is people-oriented and socially
responsible. Other than that, ASCC is responsible for building and creating a sharing society
where their lifestyle is enhanced from time to time.
