MOORING

ANCHORING OVERVIEW - PRINCIPLES
Why do we anchor
floating power plant
?

• To prevent the solar island to be blown away by the

wind, the waves, and the water flow
• To prevent movement of the solar island, or at least
minimize this movement
• To prevent the solar island to hit the banks when
water level is changing
• ~30 mooring lines /MWp

THE FEEDBACK
FROM THE EXPERT
OF OFFSHORE
ANCHORING
ENGINEERING :
THE ADDED VALUE
FROM THE MARINE 29
©Ciel & Terre International – All rights reserved
LOC GROUP OFFSHORE MOORING
LESSONS LEARNT
• Common challenges in offshore mooring
• Accidental Limit State (ALS) – Need to confirm robustness of mooring
configuration through consequence of critical line losses
• Installation challenges – Depends on soil and marine spread available (e.g.
for the deployment of drag anchors) and temporary anchoring
management
• Operational discrepancies between design and as-built – Split anchoring
campaign and mooring campaign to allow adjusted design
• Marine Warranty Survey – Expert insurance witness on-site to confirm that
the construction is handled properly (> 50 MWp FPV site). Offshore wind
used to have similar installation reliability challenges than floating solar
now faces.
• Alternative mooring configuration exists as well as components to smooth
the peak loads (i.e. aquaculture)
