Sing!
Today a lot of singers and actors use their fame to raise money for charity. You only have to go on the internet and you can see just how many
things they do. A celebrity name at a charity event can raise thousands of dollars and it is a good way for these people to give something back to
the world that has made them rich and famous.
One such person is Scottish singer songwriter Annie Lennox. She was born on 25 December 1954 into a poor family. She grew up and went to
school in Aberdeen and when she was seventeen she moved to London and went to the Royal Academy of Music where she studied the flute and
classical music for three years.
A few years later she met Dave Stewart and between 1977 and 1980 they were in a group, The Tourists, where she was the lead singer. When the
band split up, Annie and Dave formed a new band: Eurythmics. Together they recorded several albums. They sold more than 75 million albums
worldwide, with over twenty international hits. They didn’t officially separate but Annie started a solo career in the 1990s. Her first solo album,
Diva, was released in 1992 and sold around six million copies. Since then she has recorded several albums.
However, Annie Lennox isn’t just a successful singer and musician. She is a dynamic charity fundraiser * and over the years has achieved many great
results. In 2007, she recorded a fundraising single called Sing with a 23-member choir of female celebrities including Madonna, Shakira, kd lang,
Dido and Celine Dion. The money they raised went to Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), an organisation which works on the African continent.
Multi-award winning Annie Lennox has come a long way since the 1980s when she was the singer with Eurythmics. Since then, she has become a
successful solo artist and has raised money for many charitiesincluding Amnesty International, Greenpeace and Nelson Mandela’s 46664
Foundation. She does a lot of her charity work through the internet, which she calls ‘Laptop Activism’, and encourages everyone to do something to
make a difference.
*Fundraiser: someone who collects (or ‘raises’) money for charity by organising events
