SUFFIX -NESS

She has a serious illness.

We can add the suffix –ness to some adjectives to make nouns which then express “the quality
or state of being.”

EXAMPLES:
dark/ darkness great/greatness
*dizzy/dizziness *happy/happiness
*empty/emptiness ill/illness
eager/eagerness *lazy/laziness
*ready/readiness quick/quickness
*friendly/friendliness sick/sickness

*Note the spelling; change y to i

THE MILITARY MUST BE READY AT ALL TIMES.


READINESS IS VERY IMPORTANT.
Read these dialogs. They contains words with the –ness suffix.

1. Mark: It is really dark in here.


Ruth: Yes, it is. The darkness is really scary.

2. Capt. Roger: The most important part of your job is to be ready at all times.
Sgt. Ames: Yes, sir. I know that readiness is very important.

3. Ben: Everyone here is so friendly.


Sam: Yes, they are. It´s nice to be around so much friendliness.

4. Patient: Doctor, I think I´m ill. I feel dizzy when I stand up too quickly.
Doctor: Well, dizziness is a symptom of many different illnesses.

5. Mom: Now that the children are away at school, the house seems so empty.
Dad: Yes, the emptiness is hard to get used to.

6. Thomas: Have you seen how quick Jack is when he plays?


Fred: Yes. His quickness is unbelievable.
LAZY LAZINESS
Change these adjectives to nouns. Add the –ness suffix.
