Exercise 2
Abstinence

Abstinence is different for different people. For men and women who are
considering sexual activity that can lead to pregnancy, abstinence refers to
abstinence from penis-in-vaginal intercourse. For protection against infection,
abstinence means avoiding vaginal, anal, and oral-genital sex or participating in
other activities in which body fluids (semen, vaginal fluids, blood, and breast
milk) are exchanged with other people. On this page, abstinence refers to
abstinence from vaginal intercourse - when the penis is inserted into the vagina.

Abstinence as a lifestyle
Although many people abstain from sex for complex reasons such as religion or
morality, for some individuals sexual abstinence is simply a lifestyle choice.
People who fall into this category may either dislike sex, or be completely
uninterested in it.
One of the advantages of abstinence is

• Abstinence is free and available to all.

• very effective in preventing infection and pregnancy.
• Abstinence can encourage people to build relationships in other ways.
• Abstinence can increase creativity in a relationship as partners find new ways
to express intimacy with one another.
• Abstinence contributed to the decline in teenage pregnancy rates in the 90s as
the use of Depo-Provera and Norplant increased. In the near future, Implanon
may become an important new choice for teenagers.
• Has no medical side effects and so on

Apart from the advantages there are also disadvantages

• If you plan to use abstinence, and change your mind during the heat, you may
not have a contraceptive handy. Some people want to get ready and provide
condoms or spermicide if they change their mind. Others feel that having
contraceptives ready and available may tempt them.
• If only abstinence from penis-in-vaginal intercourse, there may be no
protection against infections transmitted through other activities such as oral
and anal intercourse, including herpes, genital warts, gonorrhea, and HIV etc.
