PORSCHE 911 (993) CARRERA 2
“I’ve always loved the classic 911 shape, and the 993 is my favourite. It benefited from being in the middle of 911 designs
– the 964 and 996 – that were less successful to my eyes. I had to have one. Prices were going up, but after 18 months
I finally got a call from Williams Crawford in Cornwall. I bought it unseen, on 65,000 miles. A Carrera 2, it had already had
the perfect modifications from Germany’s Roock Racing, who’d chopped a fair bit of weight out of it by removing the rear
seats, among other things. It had an engine rebuild at 30,000 miles, split-rim Cup wheels and it’s lowered, with a track
set-up that gives it just the right handling. I’ve driven it a far bit recently between my homes during the crisis.”
FORD MODEL B
“I’ve always been a hot rod fan, and John Golding in Southend has put it through
three renovations to get it to this, with the 1970s-period look – my favourite
trend. The original had a four-cylinder, and I think it was built in Cork. Most of
these feature Chevy engines, but being a Ford it should have a Ford engine – and
as I worked there at the time I got a nice discount on a 351cu in Windsor crate
engine. It’s good for c400bhp and, weighing c1200kg, you have to treat it with
respect. I’ve taken it to 120mph on strips, but I reckon it could do a bit more.”

As the Fifty years an icon subtitle

earliest days in the late ’60s through
to its 2012 revival and beyond, via
the slightly challenging cross-eyed
Aero 8 and its thankfully rather more
attractive reincarnation.
There’s an understandable focus on
the engines that have powered the
model through the years, with no fewer than three separate chapters
dedicated to the initial search for a powerplant, including a potted
history of Buick’s lightweight V8, the Buick-derived Rover V8 and
its many 3.5- to 4.6-litre variants, along with the 4.8-litre BMW N62
V8 that brought the model into the modern age.
There’s a detailed dive into the Plus 8’s early development and
its competition success. That’s meat and drink for Morgan fans, but
there’s also a lot to interest general automotive enthusiasts, with plenty
of entertaining peripheral history and fascinating segues ranging from
Harley Earl’s Buick LeSabre to Rover’s experimental turbine-powered

Those of you who are of a shy, retiring disposition should look away now. This
is not a car for the wallflower, because if you do find yourself behind the wheel
of the Harm Lagaay-designed roadster you’ll be forever explaining why the
doors look as if they’ve collapsed into the sills and that, yes, it’s definitely
a BMW. And no, it’s not for sale. Because if you own it, I reckon you will have
quite possibly made the best decision of your life.
In the current climate, when the phrase ‘on sale’ appears everywhere, Z1s
buck the trend by increasing in value at a pretty impressive rate. While you may

Elan – a trend that continues now they have all become 30-year-old classics.
Maybe because of that hefty price-tag, a mere 8000 were built and sold in
its three-year life. Finding one today isn’t too hard, but finding one that looks
as if it has just driven off the Munich production line is much tougher. That is
where this timewarp example comes into play. Having covered fewer than
40,000 miles, the metallic green Z1 has spent its life being pampered and
when the owner finally decided to sell in 2019, a BMW collector snapped it up.
Boasting a fully documented service history from Germany and the UK, it
has just had an all-important cambelt change and comes with the dealer pack

The most impressive thing about this particular Z1 is the interior. The
Alcantara and leather-trimmed seats are notoriously fragile and have usually
been either retrimmed or at least repaired by now. This one, however, still
displays its original factory material with pride. As a further indication of
the care the owner has lavished, an original Blaupunkt radio cassette player
was sourced, stripped and rebuilt to allow 21st-century technology such
as Bluetooth connectivity to be added. A neat touch.
Despite its weight-saving bolt-on panelwork and revolutionary use of
composite materials throughout, the Z1 tipped the scales surprisingly heavier

Something unusual for me this month, because it’s little more than a barn-find
– but what a find! In our November 2018 issue, Richard Heseltine wrote about
a Moretti 2300S Cabriolet, at the time one of only two known survivors. Well,
make that three, because DTR’s Paul de Turris – the man who unearthed our 1935 Austin 7 RTC Special 1932 Talbot AV 105
feature car – has found another. “I got a call from an elderly Belgian gentleman
who said there weren’t only two, because he had a third and had owned it since
£14,750 £107,500
the 1970s,” says de Turris. “It had been off the road for 40-plus years and was
stored in a garage attached to his house (above). There is a 2500SS badge on
the back, but I think it is a 2300S because it’s identical to mine.”
So, while the model is less rare than it was before the discovery, it’s no less
exciting – and to my eyes it’s gorgeous. Unveiled at the November 1962 Turin
motor show, this classically Italian styling exercise features long overhangs
and exquisite detailing. It’s the work of Giovanni Michelotti and borrows heavily
from the Ferrari 250GT SWB Bertone Speciale by Giugiaro (C&SC, April 2020)
– a car I’ve always coveted, but could never even contemplate owning.
Not that the Moretti is going to be cheap. If you’ve a talent for restoration 1932 Supercharged McEvoy 1918 Dodge Model 30
it could be yours as is for £110k, but de Turris would rather you commissioned Star Comet - £Please ask £21,500
the rebuild with DTR (judging by the results of its previous Moretti, that would
definitely be my preferred option). Either way, you’d better start saving.
“It’s had some poor DiY repairs, and the wheelarches aren’t the correct
profile,” says de Turris. “The interior is original, albeit in 56-year-old condition,
and the soft-top is missing. I would estimate 1200-plus hours of bodywork,
including structural improvements to the sills, plus at least the same again
on the interior, engine, transmission etc. If you budgeted 2500-3000 hours
in total to bring it to show condition you wouldn’t be far off.”
Ouch. On the plus side, DTR will do you a fixed-price package and the car is
complete, with all the original Moretti-specific bits still there, plus it satisfies
my long-held desire for an interesting and usable four-seater convertible. Once 1912 Mors 12/15 hp tourer 1905 Vauxhall 7/9 hp tourer
restored, it shouldn’t prove too onerous to look after, either, because all of the £27,500 £79,500
mechanical parts are donated by the Fiat 2300S – which means a sonorous
2279cc ‘six’ that should give smooth rather than startling performance.
But pace isn’t everything: it’s more about enjoying the bemusement of others
as they try to work out what it is. That alone makes it a price worth paying…

one of these Renaults became the first car to complete a solo journey across
the Sahara Desert. And it did so without any special preparation and with no
problems. Impressive. The 18,000km journey took 36 days – well, there is only
a little 951cc, single-carb, four-cylinder engine powering the Type NN, with a
mighty 15bhp or thereabouts. But then, today at least, this car isn’t about

performance, more the ambience and enjoying the ride. Tel: 01869 249999 | Email: [email protected]
By virtue of its rarity and its sweet, pale-green paintwork, this 1924 four-
door stands out even among the wonderfully eclectic offerings at the Bicester
Heritage-based company, which also include a bright yellow 1958 Comet
tanker and a ’30s Leyland Lioness fire engine (Case histories, February). The
NN’s curious but characterful grille-less front end is due to the radiator’s
location behind the engine, also revealed by the pair of filler caps on top of the
bonnet and the slashes down each side to aid cooling. And I love the external,
hand-operated horn and can only imagine the comical sound it produces.
This NN looks to be well kept and The Motor Shed’s Mark Elder reinforces
that impression, describing it as being “in very nice, sound, usable condition”.
