Problem 1.

The beam is made from three boards nailed

together as shown. If the moment acting on the cross
section is 600 N.m,
a. Locate the neutral axis of the beam.
b. Determine the moment of inertia of the
neutral axis.
c. The resultant force the bending stress
produces on the top board.

Problem 2. A 100 mm x 250 mm timber beam has a span of 4.80 m and carries a
uniform load of 12 kN/m including its own weight. The necessary data of wood
and steel are as follows:

For wood:
Modulus of elasticity = 16000 MPa
Allowable flexural stress = 10.34 MPa

For steel:
Modulus of elasticity = 200000 MPa
Allowable flexural stress = 124 MPa

Determine:
a. Safe moment capacity of the reinforced beam.
b. The width of the steel plate that can be placed at the top and bottom
of the wood section. Let the thickness of the wood = 8mm.

Problem 3. Determine the width of the steel plate with a thickness of 12.5 mm
fastened to the bottom of the wood beam 150mm x 300mm in dimension so that the
working stresses of 8 MPa for wood and 120 MPa for steel are reached
simultaneously. Use Es/Ew = 20.

Problem 4. Select the lightest W10 section for a tension member that can carry
a service dead load of 334 kN and a service live load of 445 kN. The section
has two lines of 22-mm-diameter bolt in each flange, 3 bolts per line and has
a spacing of 62.5 mm center to center of the bolt. The member is 7.3 m long.
Use A992 steel (Fy = 345 MPa, Fu = 450 MPa).

Problem 5. Select a W16 section for a compression member. The total service
load that a member can carry is 1242 kN with a dead-to-live load ratio of 5:11.
The member has a span of 6.7 m with fixed and pinned supports at the bottom and
top ends, respectively. Use the recommended K value and Fy = 345 MPa.

Problem 6. An unsymmetrical flexural member consists of a 100mm x 550mm top

flange, a 100mm x 400mm bottom flange, and a 25mm x 1650mm web.
a. Determine the distance from the top of the shape to the horizontal plastic
neutral axis.
b. Compute the plastic section modulus Z with respect to the minor principal
axis.
c. If A572 Grade 50 (Fy = 345 MPa) steel is used, what is the plastic moment
Mp for the horizontal plastic neutral axis?

Problem 7 (equivalent to 2 points). The

W18 x 40 beam shown below is laterally
supported at the ends and at the 1/3
points (points 1, 2, 3, and 4). The
concentrated load is a service live
load. Use Fy = 345 MPa and determine
the following:
a. Lp
b. Lr
c. Cb
d. Mn (Check for both FLB and LTB)
e. Is the beam adequate for flexure using LRFD?
f. Is the beam adequate for flexure using ASD?
g. Is the beam adequate for deflection?
Problem 8 (equivalent to 3 points). The figure shown is a W18 x 71 beam-column
and an A992 steel section (Fy = 345 MPa). Determine the following:
a. For the available strengths:
 Nominal strength, Pn
 Nominal moment, Mn
b. For LRFD:
 Required strength, Pu
 Required moment, Mu
 Interaction Value and conclusion if it is adequate or not
c. For ASD:
 Required strength, Pa
 Required moment, Ma
 Interaction Value and conclusion if it is adequate or not
