An Outlook on Places Related to Dr.

Jose Rizal
Last October 14, along with a few of my classmates from ABCOMM301,
we visited two of the historical places in Manila, which are related to our
national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
Fort Santiago
Located at the far end within the vicinity of Intramuros, Fort Santiago is
one of the most-sought tourist spots in Manila with its rich history.
Preserved through time, Fort Santiago is a living proof of our country’s
struggles from even before the Spanish period.
Ruins of what used to be the jail for prisoners, can still be seen inside the
premises of Fort Santiago.

Inside the Fort Santiago, just

beside the Plaza de Armas, a
ruin of what seemed like Rizal’s
cell when he was imprisoned, can
be seen with a wax figure of him
inside.

The cell is fairly spacious,

indicating that Rizal really had
enough space to work on his
medical practice and literary
pieces while imprisoned.

There are dungeons that can be

seen if you walk around but are
presently closed to the public.
Rizal Museum can also be found
nearby where it exhibits Rizal’s
life and martyrdom.
By the Baluarte de Santa Barbara, we also
found a stone bust of Dr. Jose Rizal.
Beneath where it was placed, was the
Bastion de San Lorenzo which was the
dungeon where Rizal was locked up for his
execution.

Luneta Park
On December 30,1896, Dr. Jose Rizal was executed at Bagumbayan,
which is presently called as Luneta Park.
Always filled with tourists, Luneta Park is one of our country’s most
beloved historical site. Here you can find the Rizal Monument that
contains Rizal’s remains which is always heavily guarded.
Not so distant from the monument, lies the Site of Rizal’s execution which
was previously open to the public before. According to a local vendor
there, presentations were held as tribute to the national hero.
