(4 marks)
Question 2:
(a) A couple decides that they will continue to have children until they have two boys.
Assume that the couple has an equal chance of conceiving a boy or a girl. Calculate the
probability that their second boy is their fifth child. Define clearly your random variable and
indicate your model.

(b) A telephone switchboard receives, on average, 150 calls an hour but can make only 4
connections during a given minute. Determine the probability that the switchboard cannot
handle all incoming calls in a given minute.
(4 marks)
Question 3: The weekly amount spent for maintenance in an electronic company can be
modelled as a normal distribution with mean $300 and a standard deviation of $10. Calculate
the amount that the company should be budgeted weekly so that the probability that the
budgeted amount will be exceeded is only 0.15.
(Note: the standard normal table is in the last page of the test)
