DSP Workflow – Setting a Work Group in Decline, then retrieving data for those wells

About the Data Service Provider (DSP)

The Data Service Provider provides seamless and live access to multiple public and private data sources,
enabling you to view data from different databases for a given well within Decline. For example, you could
use a smart data-source connection to obtain well header information for a well from a public data vendor,
production data from a Finder database, and additional private production data from a corporate database.
Instead of using the PDExporter tool* to import data into Decline, you can now use the DSP to view the
information without having to repeatedly import monthly data into the Decline database.
Note: the DSP functionality requires a Data Service Provider license, which is available with the
purchase of Merak PetroDesk. If you want to enquire about purchasing a PetroDesk license,
contact the SIS Global Help Desk.
*PDExporter is still an alternate method for exporting historical production from PetroDesk to Decline.

Data Service Provider (DSP) Workflows

This workflow and other accompanying workflows illustrate different ways in which you can use the DSP
for:
• retrieving data for a Decline well from an external data source;
• retrieving data for a well from multiple data sources and editing that data;
• selecting wells from a PetroDesk list and adding them to a Decline work group, then retrieving data for
those wells from one or more external data sources;
• posting a well from a PetroDesk list or map layer as the Current Entity, then saving that well to the
Decline database, and then retrieving data for that well from one or more external data sources;
• using PetroDesk Exporter to import well data from an external data source to the Decline database;
and,
• updating wells existing in the Decline database with data from an external data source (via PetroDesk
Exporter).

DSP Licensing
If you have a valid Data Service Provider (DSP) license and want to use the DSP with Decline, you must
configure Peep/Decline to request a DSP license when launching the application. See “Setting the Startup
Preferences” in Peep Help for more information.
If you choose not to request a DSP license, or if you request a license and none is available:
• the PetroDesk Work Group window will be unavailable. See “Copying a PetroDesk work group to the
Decline database” in Peep Help for information about PetroDesk work groups.
• the Data Service Provider (DSP) dialog box will be unavailable. See “Changing the DSP preferences”
later in this document for information about changing DSP preferences;
• only non-DSP wells will be displayed in the Peep select window;
• only non-DSP wells will be displayed in the Search window when you perform a search;
• only non-DSP wells will be displayed in the Select Wells dialog box when selecting wells for batch
well forecasts, plots, summary reports, or reports; and,
• only non-DSP wells will be summarized when performing batch recalculations of summary wells.

Archiving historical data

Historical data contained in the Decline database is lost when you change the data-source connection for a
given well. To ensure that historical data is not permanently lost, Decline automatically generates a Peep
export (.mer) file containing this historical data when you change data-source connections.
Use the Archive feature to define the location where these .mer files will be stored (this location may
already have been set during the installation of Merak Peep).
To archive historical data:
1. In the Peep Select window, click the Wells tab, then right-click and choose DSP Preferences.
2. Click the folder next to the Archive field. The Browse for Folder dialog box opens.
3. Navigate to the folder where you want to store any backup .mer files created when changing data
source connections. These backup files are named using the following convention: "[well_name]
([well_ID]).mer".
4. Change the data source connections as desired.
Note: When the .mer file is imported back into Peep, the wells are displayed on the Wells tab of
the Peep Select window using their proper names, rather than their UWIs.

Creating a list in PetroDesk

You can create a list in different ways:
• by selecting objects from a PetroDesk map;
• by running a query; and,
• by combining the contents of two other lists.
These methods are described in this topic.
To create a list from a map:
1. Make active the map from which you want to create the list by clicking its tab at the bottom of
PetroDesk’s Map pane.
2. Make active the layer from which you want to select the object(s), by clicking on it in the Layer
Management pane at the left side of the PetroDesk window.

3. Click the Select to List toolbar button, click and drag a box around objects grouped together, or
press and hold the <Ctrl> key to select objects (or groups of objects) from different parts of a map.
The selected objects are added to the Working List.
Note: If you select objects from a saved list layer and that list contains columns, the
columns are added to the Working list; when you refresh the list, the columns are populated
with data

4. Save the contents of the Working List if desired by clicking the Add List to Project button and
naming your new list.
To create a list from a query:
1. Create a new query. Or, open a saved query. (See “Creating a query” and “Opening a saved query” in
PetroDesk Help for more information about these topics).
2. Run the query; the query results are added to the Working List.

www.sis.slb.com 2
DSP Workflow – Setting a Work Group in Decline, then retrieving data for those wells

3. Save the contents of the Working List if desired by clicking the Add List to Project button and
naming your new list.
To create a list by combining the contents of two other lists:
Use the List Set Operation feature to create a new list based on the contents of two other lists (including
the Working List, unopened lists in the current project, or lists from the PDStore), using set operators to
define what records will be included on the new list. When using this feature, both source lists being used
to create the new list must share the same item definition type (e.g. two well lists or two land lists).
When you perform a list set operation, a new list is created and added to the Lists folder in the Project pane.
Notes:
• If working with lists containing multiple records that share the same key value (e.g. DLS
land lists with several parcels that share the same Agreement ID), the List Set Operations
feature may not deliver the expected results.
• When you create a list that combines a spatial list with a non-spatial list, the contents of the
resulting list will lack a spatial component (i.e. it will be a non-spatial list).
To create a new list based on two other lists:
1. Choose List menu > Set Operation. The List Set Operation dialog box appears.
The List A field is populated based on what list is active (or visible) when opening the List Set
Operation dialog box:
• If Split Pane is your selected List/Map pane preference and a list is visible in the List pane, the
List A field is populated with the name of the visible list;
• If an empty Working List was the active view, the List A field remains blank and the Working
List is not available for selection in the Lists tree;
• If Single Pane is your selected List/Map pane preference and a map is the active view, the List A
field remains blank.
2. If the List A field is blank, or if you want to choose a different list as List A, select the desired list
from the Lists or PDStore Lists folders in the Lists tree, then click the Add button to add it to
the List A field.
3. Select the Retain List A columns and visualizations check box if you want to apply List A's
properties (i.e. text and graphic visualizations, list color and font preferences, footers, grouping, etc.) to
your new list. If this check box is cleared, the new list will include only the Symbol, Key and
Description columns, and no visualizations or other list properties.
4. Working in the Lists tree, select the list you want to use as List B, then click the Add button next to
the List B read-only field to populate that field with the name of the desired list.
5. Select one of the option buttons in the Set operators option group to define how the new list will be
created:
• Select the Union operator to create a list that includes all unique members of List A and List B;
• Select the Intersection operator to create a list that includes all members common to List A and
List B;
• Select the Subtraction operator to create a list that includes all the members of List A minus any
members that are also in List B;
• Select the (Symmetric) Difference operator to create a list that includes all members in List A and
List B, minus any members common to both lists.
6. Click OK to open the Add to PetroDesk Project dialog box and provide a name for your new list:
• Type a Name, or use the one provided by PetroDesk;
• Select the Save project file after adding component check box to save your project after creating
the new list;

www.sis.slb.com 3
DSP Workflow – Setting a Work Group in Decline, then retrieving data for those wells

• You can save new lists in the Lists folder or in any of the subfolders inside it, but not outside the
Lists folder.
7. Click OK to close the Add to PetroDesk Project dialog box and add the list to the project; the new
list opens and becomes the active view.

Setting a Working Group in Decline

Use the Set Working Group in Decline feature to add new well groups into a Merak Peep Decline database
from within PetroDesk. You can create a working group after selecting wells from a PetroDesk map layer
or list (including the Working List).
When you use this feature, PetroDesk sends a list of wells (and the name of the their data-source
connection) to a temporary buffer within Peep Decline; this buffer is overwritten each time you set a new
working group. The PetroDesk data-source connection specified for these wells becomes their default
Decline connection. Once the wells are copied to the Decline database, you can change their data-source
connection if necessary.
Well-identifier information for the selected wells is copied into the Decline database, but the Data Service
Provider (DSP) is used to retrieve historical data from the data-source connection that was used in
PetroDesk.
After setting a working group in Peep Decline, you can add the wells to their own group, then move them
to other Decline well groups, view them in Decline, change their data source, perform forecasts, etc.
The Set Working Group in Decline feature is only available if Merak Peep 2002 or later versions of Peep
are installed on your system.

To set a working group in Peep Decline:

1. Select the desired well records from a saved list or the Working List. Or, select wells from a list or
item layer on a PetroDesk map.
2. You can set a working group in different ways:
• Right-click the selected records on the list (or anywhere on the map layer) to open the Shortcut
menu, and choose Set Working Group in Decline, then Using Selection or Using Entire List.
- OR -
• Choose Data menu > Set Working Group in Decline > Using Selection or Using Entire List.

If selecting wells from an item layer, always set a working group using the
selection. Do not attempt to set a working group for the entire list (i.e. for all the
wells on an item layer).
3. Go to the Peep/Decline application window and perform the desired tasks. See Peep Help for more
information on creating well groups, copying PetroDesk work groups to the Decline database, etc.

DSP Workflow – Setting a Work Group in Decline, then retrieving data for those wells

Creating a Well Group in Decline Based on Wells

From a PetroDesk List
After using PetroDesk's Set Working Group in Decline to populate the PetroDesk Work Group window
with one or more selected wells, you can create a work group containing those wells in the Decline
database. When you do this, the wells become DSP wells, and the data-source connection that was used for
them in PetroDesk automatically becomes their connection in Decline.
When you create a work group in Decline based on selected PetroDesk wells, well-identifier
information (but not historical data) for those wells is copied to the Decline database. Decline
will retrieve live production and test data from the wells' current data-source connection.
To create a work group in the Decline database based on PetroDesk wells:
1. Select the desired wells in PetroDesk and use the Set Working Group in Decline feature to populate the
PetroDesk Work Group window in Peep/Decline.

The PetroDesk data connection for the wells is displayed (in brackets) at the top of the window.

2. Click the Create Group button to open the New Group Settings dialog box.
3. Create a new group for the wells in the PetroDesk Work Group window, adding a summary well if
desired.
4. Once you finish, the group (folder) is added to the Wells tab in the Peep Select window and populated
with the PetroDesk wells (and the summary well, if you created one). The wells are also added to the
All Wells folder.
At this point you can open the well and view it in the Well document pane, or change its data-source
connection. If you want to copy historical data for the wells to the Decline database, select the Decline
DB as their data-source connection, then save the wells.
Each time you set a working group in Decline from PetroDesk, the PetroDesk Work Group window
is populated with the selected wells.

DSP Workflow – Setting a Work Group in Decline, then retrieving data for those wells

Changing Data-Source Connections

You can change the data source connection one or more wells from the Wells tab of the Peep Select
window. For example, you can change a connection in the All Wells list from the Decline database
(default) to a data vendor's connection so that you can view the well's up-to-date historical data.
To change the data-source connection for one or more wells:
1. You can change a data source from the Peep Select window or the Search window (if working in the
Peep Select window, click the Wells tab or the Recent tab).
2. Select the well(s) for which you want to change the data source (hold down the <Ctrl> key to select
more than one well).
3. Right-click and choose Change Data Source. The Select Data Source dialog box opens.

If any of the wells you have selected are open, you will be prompted to close them before continuing.
Decline cannot change data source connections for an open well.

4. Select a connection from the Data Source drop-down list of available and configured data source
connections. If no other connections are listed other than the Decline database, the Data Service
Provider (DSP) probably has not been properly installed and configured. Contact the SIS Global Help
Desk for more information.
See “Obtaining data for a Decline well from multiple databases” in Peep Help for information about
working with smart data-source connections.
5. Click the More info button to expand the Select Data Source dialog box to show information about
the currently selected connection. If a smart data-source connections is selected, the various data-
source connections used to create it are displayed in order of priority, along with any filters that were
applied to the connections.
6. Click OK to make the change. If a .mer file of the same name already exists in the DSP Properties
(right-click in Wells tab, choose DSP Properties), you will be prompted to overwrite the existing file.

• When changing the connection for wells whose historical data is stored in the Decline database
(or wells with smart connections that are linked to the Decline database a production history
) export (.mer) file is automatically generated in the Archive location specified in the DSP
Preferences dialog box. You can import this data back into the Decline database later if
required. These export files use the following naming convention: "[well_name]
([well_ID]).mer".
• When changing the data-source connection for wells whose historical data is not stored in the
Decline database (e.g. wells connected to a different data source) no .mer file is generated.
Notes:
• When a new well is created, the data source will always default to Peep (Decline database).
• Summary wells will ALWAYS list Peep as their data source.
• When wells are imported into Decline in Overwrite mode, their data source will default to Peep. When
wells are imported into Decline in Append mode, the wells remain connected to the original data
source (DSP).
• Temporary wells will retain their UWIs and their connection to a data source when being saved, unless
you have chosen a data-source override. If you choose to Save As, the well is saved to the Decline
database.
• A DSP well (i.e. a well with a data source other than the Decline database) can be linked to an
economic case.

Obtaining Data for a Decline Well From Multiple

Databases
You can retrieve data from multiple data sources for one or more Decline wells if desired, by selecting a
smart data-source connection for those wells. Depending on how the smart connection is configured, you
can do this in different ways:
• Retrieve different types of data from different data sources:
For example, you could obtain well header information from Data Source A, production information
from Data Source B and gas analysis data from Data Source C. In this case, the Data Service Provider
(DSP) would query the various data sources for the desired information, then present it on the
appropriate tab(s) in the Document pane (e.g. production information would appear on the Data tab,
Mthly side tab and gas analysis data on the P/Z tab).
• Retrieve the same type of data from different data sources:
For example, you could obtain new production data (i.e. three months old or newer) from Data Source
A, and older production data (i.e. more than three months old) from Data Source B.
A smart data-source connection could also be configured to retrieve all production data from two
different sources, assigning a higher priority to one of them. For example, if duplicate data existed in
Data Sources A and B, the DSP would retrieve only data from Data Source A. However, if data for a
given month were missing from Data Source A, the DSP would automatically retrieve that data from
the other data source.
See "Changing data-source connections" earlier in this document for information on changing a well's
connection.
You can also configure Decline to change the color of well names on the Wells tab in the Peep Select
window, and data in the Document pane, based on each well's data-source connection (each data source is
represented by its own color). See "Changing the DSP Preferences" for more information on assigning
colors to data-source connections.

For the DSP to access the Decline database, the decline data must not be blobbed.

Opening a Well
1. From the Peep Select window, click the Wells tab.
2. Expand the folder that contains the well you want to open. If you want to browse the list, expand the
All Wells folder.
3. Click the well to highlight it, then right-click and select "\Open well from the Shortcut menu, or
double-click the well.
The Well document opens.

www.sis.slb.com 8

Editing DSP Well Data

When working with a Data Service Provider (DSP) well, any data from non-Decline data sources appears
in read-only format in the Well document. However, if the DSP retrieves data from an external Decline
data-source connection, that data will be editable.

After retrieving data from a non-Decline data source, it is possible to copy it into your current Decline
database and then edit the data, provided you are using a properly configured smart connection: as long as
the desired section in the smart connection is linked to your current Decline database and to an external
non-Decline data source connection, you will be able to copy selected data from that data source into the
Decline database.
For example, the Production Monthly section for a given smart connection is linked to the local Decline
database connection and to the Sample connection. In this case, you can copy production data from the
Sample database into the Decline database. Since the Pressure Tests section for the same smart connection
is linked to the Sample connection and to a third-party connection (but not to the local Decline database),
you will be unable to copy pressure-test data into the Decline database.
See below to find out how to copy DSP well data to the Decline database, or to remove data from the
Decline database. You can also view the properties of a smart connection (below) directly from any of the
side tabs on the Data tab in the Document pane.
To copy DSP well data to the Decline database:
1. Working on the Wells or Recent tabs in the Peep Select window, select the well whose data you want
to edit.
2. Ensure that the well has a smart data-source connection, and that the section corresponding to the side
tab you want to edit is linked to the Decline database and another data-source connection. To do this:
• Right-click the well and choose Change Data Source, verifying that the selected connection is a
smart connection (the connection name appears in the Data Source drop-down list). Then...
• Open the Data Services Provider (DSP) dialog box, select the smart connection from the Data
Connection Colors list and click the More info button to see a description of the connection. If
you want to edit data on a particular tab, the corresponding section in the smart connection must
be linked to the Decline database and one other data-source connection.
For example, if you want to copy monthly production values to the Decline database, then the
Production Monthly section in the Description of selected connection box should show links to
the Decline database and the database from which you want to copy the data. If this is not the case,
ask your system administrator to update your smart connection.
3. Double-click the well to open it in the Document pane, then click the Data tab, and the side tab whose
values you want to change.
4. Select the cell(s) whose value(s) you want to edit.

If editing several values on a given row, you need only to select one cell on that row before starting.
If editing values on multiple rows, select one cell from each row.

5. Right-click the selected cell(s) and choose Smart Connection > Copy Data to Decline Database. The
cell backgrounds on the selected rows will turn white to indicate that they have become editable, and
the data will change to the color (if any) assigned to the Decline data-source connection.
6. Select each value that you want to edit and change it as desired.
7. Save the well. Data from the selected row(s) will be copied to the Decline database.

www.sis.slb.com 9
DSP Workflow – Setting a Work Group in Decline, then retrieving data for those wells

When multiple data-source connections are linked to the same section in a smart connection, each of
them is assigned a priority in the smart-connection hierarchy. In the example at the beginning of this
topic, when searching for data, if the Decline database were the top connection in the Production Monthly
section, the DSP would look first in the Decline database for monthly production data, then fill in any
gaps with data from the Sample database.
After editing DSP data and copying it to the Decline database, depending on the position of the various
data-source connections within the well's smart connection hierarchy (or filters applied to those
connections), data saved to the Decline database may not appear when you reopen or refresh a DSP well.
For example, upon refreshing a DSP well after copying production data from the Sample database to the
Decline database, if Sample connection were above the Decline database connection within the Production
Monthly section (in the smart connection), the DSP may display production data from the Sample database
instead of the data that was copied to the Decline database.
See your system administrator if you need to change the hierarchy of a smart connection.
To remove data from the Decline database:
You can remove data that was previously copied to the Decline database if necessary. As when copying
data to the Decline database, the well you are editing must have a smart data-source connection, and the
section in the connection should be linked to the Decline database and one other connection. For example,
if you want to delete monthly production values, the Production Monthly section in the smart connection
should be linked to the Decline database and another data-source connection.
To remove data:
1. Double-click the well to open it in the Document pane, then click the Data tab, and the side tab whose
values you want to change.
2. Select the cell(s) whose value(s) you want to remove.

When you select one cell on a given row, all the values on that row will be removed from the Decline
database. To remove data from multiple rows, select one cell from each row.

3. Right-click the selected cell(s) or row(s)and choose Smart Connection > Remove Data from Decline
Database. The result depends on the tab where you are located:
• On the Mthly side tab, data on the selected rows is replaced by dashes (---) and becomes read-
only;
• On the Test and Pres tabs, the selected row(s) disappear(s);
• On any other tabs, the data is either replaced by zeroes or blanked out. The data is updated the
next time the well is refreshed or opened.
4. Save the well. Any changes you made are saved to the Decline database.
To view the properties of a smart connection from the Document pane:
1. Open a well that has a smart connection. To see the well's current connection, right-click the well on
the Recent or Wells tabs of the Peep Select window and choose Change Data Source. The current
connection appears in the Data Source drop-down list.
2. Click the Data tab in the Document pane, then any of the side tabs (e.g. Parms, Mthly, etc.).
3. Right-click any data item on the tab and choose Smart Connection > Smart Connection Properties
to open the Data Service Provider (DSP) dialog box.
4. Use the options in this dialog box to view or update the smart-connection properties.

Refreshing DSP Well Data

When working with a Data Service Provider (DSP) well that has a smart connection, after editing the well,
you can save the changes to the Decline database, then refresh the well. To do this, choose File menu >
Save and Refresh Well Data. Decline saves the well, closes it, then reopens and refreshes it. Depending on
how you have set up your well options, the Well document may open on a different tab.
Depending on the position of the various data-source connections within a smart connection hierarchy (or
filters applied to those connections), data saved to the Decline database may not appear when you reopen
or refresh a DSP well.

Changing the DSP Preferences

Each data-source connection available through the Data Service Provider (DSP) can be assigned a different
color, making it easier to identify a well's connection. You can also configure the DSP to start
automatically when Decline is launched.
To assign a color to a DSP data-source connection:
1. Open the Data Service Provider (DSP) dialog box. You can do this in different ways:
• In the Peep Select window, click the Wells tab or the Recent tab, then right-click and choose DSP
Preferences.
- OR -
• If working with a well that has a smart connection, you can open the Data Service Provider
(DSP) dialog box from any of the side tabs on the Data tab in the Document pane. To do this,
right-click on any data item and choose Smart Connection > Smart Connection Properties.
2. Select a data source connection from the Data Connection Colors list, then click the Set Color button
to open the Color dialog box and select the color you want to assign to that data source. Repeat as
desired for each available data source.
3. Select the Use colors on Peep Select Window check box to change the color of wells on the Recent
or Wells tabs in the Peep Select window, based on their data-source connection.
4. Select the Use Colors on Data Entry Views check box to change the color of data on the side tabs on
the Data tab (e.g. Parms, Mthly, etc.) based on the selected well's data-source connection.
5. Select the Load DSP when Decline Starts check box to automatically start the DSP when Decline is
launched.
6. Select the location where historical data will be archived when you change the data-source connection
for a well.
7. Choose a data source connection to use for temporary wells if necessary.
8. Click the More info button to expand the Data Service Provider (DSP) dialog box:
• When you select a data source in the Data Connection Colors list, information about that
connection appears in the Description of selected connection box. If a smart data-source
connection is selected, the various data source connections used to create it are displayed in order
of priority, along with any filters that were applied to the connections.

www.sis.slb.com 11
DSP Workflow – Setting a Work Group in Decline, then retrieving data for those wells

• Click the Clean Up button to open the DSP Data Connections Cleanup dialog box, which
displays all the data-source connections currently being used (or that have been used) by wells in
the Decline database. The number of wells using each connection is displayed, along with the
Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) for that connection.
When you select the check box next to a given connection, the Delete Selected Connection button
becomes available, enabling you to delete that connection if it is not currently being used by any
wells. Click the Select All Unused Connections button to automatically select all unused
connections. Once you delete any connections, click Save to close the dialog box and save the
changes. Deleted connections are removed from the Data Connection Colors list in the Data
Service Provider (DSP) dialog box.
9. Click the Less info button to return the Data Service Provider (DSP) dialog box to its original size.
10. Click Save to apply your changes to the Peep Select window and/or the tabs in the Document pane.
A well is not automatically assigned a different color when its data source connection is changed,
unless the new connection has already been assigned a color.
