Common smile enhancement procedures

Here at Clagett Periodontics & Implant Dentistry, Dr. Clagett and his team of experts offer
professional smile enhancement services such as:

 Esthetic crown lengthening or gum lift

 Gummy smile correction
 Gum grafting
 Laser gum pigmentation removal
 Tissues sculpting
 Bonding
 Dental bridging
 Other

Esthetic crown lengthening

The esthetic crown lengthening process involves reshaping the bone tissue and excess gum.
This treatment can be used for a select number of teeth or the entire teeth curvature to
uncover a wider and more beautiful smile. Laser reshaping is often performed towards the
end of the crown lengthening process for ideal esthetic outcomes.

Gum lift/gummy smile correction

A gummy smile is caused by excessive vertical growth of the gums. Orthodontics,

maxillofacial surgery and esthetic crown lengthening or tissue sculpting treatments may be
used in the treatment based on the evaluation and best fit for you. Dr. Clagett and his team
have a very effective treatment for such problems. Based on the nature of your particular
dental situation, the treatment may include at least one of these:

 Surgical lip repositioning.

 Same-day laser medicines (in minor cases).
 Orthodontics (Braces) to move the teeth into more accurate positions.
 Maxillofacial surgery to reposition the bone.
 Surgical Sculpting of the bone and gingival tissues to create sounder and healthier
and more appealing gum shapes.

Gum grafting

There are a number of gum grafting options that have been described in greater detail on
the Receding Gums Treatment page, including:

 Acellular dermal matrix allograft

 Free gingival graft
 Subepithelial connective tissue graft

Dr. Clagett will work with you to determine which option will work best for you.

Uneven gum line

There are a number of things that can result in unevenness in gum line such as:

 It could be the result of a specific health issue.

 Taking certain prescription drugs.
 Excessively high gums.
 Gum subsidence or recession can influence your teeth and make them seem too
lengthy. In this condition, the gum tissue gets pulled down from the teeth exposing
the roots.

Gum re-contouring
This procedure can be performed to even-out your gum line; it is also used when porcelain
veneers have to be applied.

Cosmetic laser gum surgery

Patients that have uneven gums or overgrown gums that cover a large portion of their
teeth can benefit from laser gum surgery. In this procedure, your gum line will be corrected
to fit the contour of your teeth, delivering a more symmetrical gum line.

Restorative reconstruction

Restorative reconstruction is a specialized dentistry option for patients with more complex
dental needs. This process involves various restorative dentistry procedures to either
restore/rebuild all of the teeth in the lower and upper jaws. Full-mouth reconstruction may
also involve:

 TMJ therapy
 Dental implants
 Crowns
 Fillings
 Bridgework
 Other dental procedures

Restorative reconstruction can often be accomplished in one or two visits. This process
may also involve qualified oral health professionals in different areas of cosmetic,
restorative, and sedation therapy but it allows you to very quickly reclaim your smile.

Implant-supported dentures

An implant-supported denture is a type of over-denture that is connected to and supported

by implants. This is very different from a traditional denture that sits on the gums and is
not supported by implants. An implant-supported denture is recommended when a patient
doesn’t have any teeth, but has sufficient bone in their jaw to anchor and support the
implants.

Overgrown gum tissue during orthodontics

Swollen, tender, red gums and the overgrowth of gum tissues is generally experienced by
the large majority of individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment. The swollen gum
tissue and overgrowth of gum tissues settles down and the gums go back to normal once
the braces have been removed. If the tissue does not reposition itself at the end of the
orthodontic treatment, the gums can be reshaped and treated to look more normal.
