The Main Characters that gave significant impact to the plot or flow of the story are
as follows:
The Mother(Protagonist) – the ever caring, trusting yet strong mother of the
two children that are close to being physically and sexually abuse in the story.
She is the deconstructive entity in the story that broke the stigma of thinking
women are just weak and dependent kind of sexuality.
Vicente(Antagonist) – The bus conductor whom the protagonist thought of
entrusting their trust and confidence on which readers later on found out, is
not a good idea .
Oscar(Protagonist) – One of the protagonist’s child that is tricked by Vicente
into showing a façade that is far from true in the aspect of his nature.
The little girl(Protagonist) – One of the protagonist’s child and also the one
that is subjected to the antagonist’s evil doing. Together with Oscar and her
Mother, she is also been tricked by Vicente into believing that he is a good
man.
Ms. Alfon Estrella does not seem to care about a definite time or date in her
interesting piece since it seems to focus on a times issue. The place of the
story is the Mother’s house, that setting and around it was artistically
described by Alfon Estrella using a bunch of metaphorical phrases and
symbolism.
3. What happened in the story? Plot it. (25 points)
Since it is made to be a Fictional Narrative kind of piece, it follows the regular plot
sequence and phasing.
Beginning/Exposition
The flow of the story initially started when the author gave the best first impression
for the bus conductor namely Vicente. It is implied in the symbolism and use of
positive metaphorical comparison that Vicente is known by the Mother and her two
children as a kind, gentle and reliable acquaintance /tutor. With the way he
establishes himself in the residence, it is obvious that he has full control of the
family’s trust and confidence
Rising Action
Moving on with the story, one-night Vicente came a bit earlier than he usually does.
He just stood there watching both the children while studying and said that he will
give the two a set of pencil that can make their schoolmates jealous. Vicente, during
that encounter asked Oscar (the big brother of the girl) to fetch him some glass of
water.
Climax
Taking advantage of Oscar being away for a moment, Vicente held the little girl. It
was very voluntary that the little girl opens her arms to be held, maybe because of
the trust establish by Vicente. From there he put the little girl on his lap. By this
moment, the little girl got nervous and kept squirming because she felt
uncomfortable in the sudden change of behavior of Vicente. Now the girl who is
frightened and hasten herself away from Vicente, this has been witnessed by the
mother while holding the snacks she prepared. Vicente was confronted and slapped.
Falling Action
Vicente like the culprit and abusive that he is, in contrary to the façade he wore has
been thrown out of the house and lost his job as a tutor. The mother then tends to
her children after those traumatic events.
Dénouement/Resolution
The mother while bathing her daughter took the clothes off the trash together with
pencil given by Vicente and burn it like how they should burn that sad and infuriating
memory of entrusting her children to Vicente. It is in this story that the issue of
domestic and child abuse is being raise. It is also visible in the story that Ms. Estrella
is killing the stigma of a mother being weak, instead she showed us one courageous
woman do exist, especially when it is in regards to her children.
Since the story is Fictional Narrative story, there exist few literary devices or
elements exclusive to this genre and it is stated as follows:
