WORKSHEET 1: TYPES OF PLATE BOUNDARIES

Name______________________________Year and Section___________________ Score____________________

Teacher______________________________ School___________________________________Date_____________
Objective: Describe the different types of plate boundaries

BIG IDEAS
 A tectonic plate (also called lithospheric plate) is a massive, irregularly shaped slab of solid rock, generally
composed of both continental and oceanic lithosphere. Plate size can vary greatly, from a few hundred to
thousands of kilometers across.
 Tectonic plates are classified as oceanic and continental. Oceanic crust is the outermost layer of Earth’s
lithosphere that is found under the oceans. It is thinner, denser and younger in comparison to continental crust.
While Continental crust is the relatively thick part of the earth's crust that forms the large landmasses. It is
generally older and more complex than the oceanic crust.
 Tectonic plates move relative to each other forming the three types of plate boundaries. The movement of
tectonic plates might result to occurrence of earthquakes and change in the physical feature of the earth.

1. Divergent Boundary -tectonic plates MOVE AWAY from each other

2. Convergent Boundary -tectonic plates move TOWARD EACH OTHER’; collision

3. STRIKE-SLIP BOUNDARY- two tectonic plates SLIDE past each other
