Dynamic Positioning System
Dynamic Positioning System
In general, there are four standards of DP system starting with classes “0”, “I”, “II” “III”.
Basing of minimum classification rules requirement, in order to meet DP class III, the systems
used for positioning operation must be provided with duplicate systems. (Dual Redundancy,
Single failure mode)
These includes:-
1) Duplicate Control power supply (24 Vdc, UPS 220V) to the control panels and stands at
the respective control station. Example:- fwd & aft working bridges.
2) Duplicate sensors (Draught, DPGS, wind, etc) required for the DP system to function.
These sensors must be located at different positions, properly segregated as far as
practical.
3) Thrusters’ control system interface to the DP system control panels at different locations.
4) Duplicate Main Power supply to the thruster systems, which includes the ventilation fans
for the thruster rooms, battery chargers and UPS (independent for each thruster control &
DP control). This is with assumption that the Thrusters are engine driven type.
5) If thrusters are electrically driven, the main power supply to the electric motors shall be
dual feed from separate switchboards and terminate with a COS within the thruster
rooms.
6) Communication between thrusters’ room and operation in working bridges must be with
duplication. In this case, the telephone system shall be of Primary & Secondary system.
The above systems, the equipment, panels, sensors must be located at different positions, properly
segregated and routed in separate cableways which includes tagging of each cable passing
through each transit and laid on the cable tray or ladder.
The common system cables meant for interface between two operation areas shall be installed in
A60 conduits from thruster rooms till the operation control areas, example:- fwd & aft working
bridge.
These routing must be represented on drawings for each cable of each system giving the exact
cable routing starting and ending point.
The positioning of the control station or consoles must be in a good visual and easy access
location. The viewing angle of the operation must not be less than 80 degrees over the horizon.
